Forsan High School Band steps on to state while the Coahoma High School ended it's marching contest season Saturday.
Earning top honors at Area Class 1A contest, Forsan qualified for its eighth consecutive trip to University Interscholastic League (UIL) state contest under the leadership of band director of Jim Rhodes. The band placed first in the finals held in Ratliff Stadium, Odessa.
Coahoma band had a little further to go â€” Amarillo â€” for Class 2A Area competition.
Rosa Lee Allred, 93, of Big Spring, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Royce Clay and Royce Clay Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at the funeral home.

Horace E. Tubb, 89, of Big Spring, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Joey Bacon officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

SWEETWATER â€” Out to prove they're no fluke, the Steers (6-2) traveled to Mustang Bowl Friday to take on Sweetwater (3-5) â€” as well as earn their second consecutive district victory.
They did just that. Big Spring defeated the Mustangs 65-42, asserting its dominance in a district it couldn't find a way to win in for the past two seasons. But good things come to those who wait. And BSHS Head Coach Phillip Ritchey is glad the wait is over. Not only are the Steers a shoe-in for the playoffs, they could win or split the 4-3A title.
Our father and husband, Ignacio Mendoza Jr. (Wico) passed away Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013.
Ignacio was born in Big Spring, Texas, on March 8, 1949. He graduated from Big Spring High School and continued on to Ranger College and West Texas State University. In 1972, Ignacio traveled from Texas to California and met Elena, who he married Aug. 16, 1975. Ignacio and Elena made Oxnard, Calif., their home. He worked as an insurance agent for Allstate Insurance Company for 35 years.

That's the message the Mustang Draw Woodcarvers Club will be spreading when they host their annual Show and Sale starting Monday at the Dora Roberts Community Center.
The annual event serves as both a showcase of club members' talents and a teaching experience. On one hand, the public will get a chance to view some of the finest wood carvings to be found in this area. On the other, they can try their hand at the craft themselves.
