Judge Yeats is seeking a 2nd term

118th District Court Judge Tim Yeats has filed for re-election in the March primaries.

Yeats, who was first elected to the position in November 2010, filed with the Republican Party.
The 118th Judicial District Court is a court of general jurisdiction which hears criminal, civil and family law cases in Howard, Martin and Glasscock counties.

Academic performance major focus for BSISD, trustees told

Trustees with the Big Spring Independent School District approved plans targeted to improve academic performance at the district and school level Thursday night.

“We didn’t get in this position overnight,” said BSISD Interim Superintendent Chris Wigington. “This is going to take a while for us to get back to where we need to be. I know everyone wants results now, and we’re trying to get to that point, but it is going to take time.

Jessie Henry, 61, of Big Spring, died thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at his residence after a short battle with leukemia. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

He was born Nov. 19, 1951, in Big Spring, Texas and married Karen Daniels Feb. 14, 1975, in Big Spring.
Jessie was a lifelong resident of Big Spring and worked in the oil fields all his life. He was currently working for R.H. Well Service. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling the back roads and watching westerns and war history movies.

J.D. "Jake" Hyden, 84, of Waco, formerly of Big Spring died Thursday Nov. 14, 2013 at his home after a lengthy illness. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Teresa Cassidy officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

May Lefern Pierce

Mrs. May Lefern Pierce, 84, of Monroe, N.C., formerly of Big Spring, Texas, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at her residence.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at Gail Cemetery, Gail, Texas. A celebration of her life will be conducted at noon Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at the Henry Hall Wilson Home, 1301 East Franklin St. in N.C..

Mrs. Pierce was born Sept. 19, 1929, in Victoria, Texas, a daughter of the late John Wilbourn and Birdie M. Pearce Wilbourn. She was married to the late Lee Roy Pierce, who passed in 1976.

Help an Angel this Christmas season

Almost 200 Howard County families are depending on you for a merry Christmas.

That's roughly the number of people who have applied for the Salvation Army's annual Angel Tree program, which solicits Christmas gifts for needy children and seniors in this area.

Ada Lafler of the local Salvation Army office said 133 families registered their children for the program, while about 50 seniors applied.

“Actually, that number is a little bit more than last year,” Lafler said.

Olga Godina, 54, of Big Spring, died Monday Nov. 4, 2013, at her home after a long battle with cancer. Memorial services will be 5 p.m. Thursday at East Fourth Baptist Church.

She was born May 24, 1959 to Esperanza and Pablo Escobar in Levelland, Texas. She had been a resident of Big Spring for 16 years, moving to the community from Brownfield. She was a Catholic and a homemaker.

Louise 'Nana' Booth

Louise “Nana” Booth, 89, of Big Spring, Texas, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 in a Midland, Texas, hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

She was born June 4, 1924, in McKinney, Texas, and married Ed Booth Feb. 7, 1942, in Weatherford, Texas. He preceded her in death Nov. 14, 2000.
