14 indicted by grand jury

Fourteen people were indicted during a Halloween Day session of the Howard Grand Jury Thursday:

• Amy Abrego, 32, 1905 Wasson No. 39, possession of a controlled substance (third degree felony).
• Paula J. Bulter, 44, currently in Travis County Jail, three counts of delivery of a controlled substance (offenses range from state jail felony to first degree felony).
• Latonya Cubit, 32, 600 Interstate 20 No. 123, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (both enhanced to first degree felonies).

Local merchants will take part in holiday promotions

Forget Black Friday — let’s start shopping now.

The Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce and local merchants are rolling out “The 12 Days Before Black Friday” event to in encourage residents to get shopping on their minds.

“The Chamber Business Development Committee came up with the idea on how to get people to shop locally,” said Debbye ValVerde, Chamber executive director. “We want the community to see what unique shops we have now right in our backyard."

Leland Hyatt, 86, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, in a Colorado City nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev.s Mark Lindsey and Mike Couch officiating.

He was born April 17, 1927, in Rushville, Ind. and married Mona Lee Arnold May 28, 1955, in Connersville, Ind.

He had been a resident of Big Spring since 1979 and worked as the custodian at First Baptist Church, retiring in 1998. He loved puzzles, making miniature display horses and saddles and the Indy 500.

Jessie Marie Nelson, 94, of San Angelo, formerly of Big Spring, died Sunday Oct. 27, 2013, at Park Plaza Nursing and Rehab Center in San Angelo. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Man gets 240 months for child porn charges

ABILENE, Texas — Aaron Charles Lustfeldt, 27, of Big Spring was sentenced Wednesday to 240 months in federal prison, following his guilty plea in June to one count of receipt of child pornography.

Handing down the sentence was U.S. District Judge Jorge A. Solis, and announced by U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Saldaña of the Northern District of Texas.

Friday last day of early voting for Nov. 5 election

Friday provides the final opportunity to vote early in the Nov. 5 Texas constitutional amendments election.

Polls — located in the Howard County Courthouse’s election office — will open at 8 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

Those choosing to cast a vote Friday or on Nov. 5 will be required to show photo identification, officials say.

Acceptable forms of photo ID are:

• Texas driver’s license.
• Texas Election Identification Certificate (issued by Department of Public Safety).
• Texas personal identification card (issued by DPS).
• Texas concealed handgun license.

Duo step down from EDC board

The Big Spring Economic Development Corparation gave heartfelt thanks to two board members whose terms had expired and welcomed two new faces at Tuesday night's meeting.

Dr. Keith Ledford and Justin Myers were given certificates of appreciation for their service to the EDC and Big Spring.

“It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve on the board under the stewardship of Terry Wegman,” said Dr. Ledford in his farewell address. To incoming board members Ledford gave this advice, “Keep in mind we have to be concerned with not only today, but with the future at hand. boom or bust.”

Alvina 'Vina' Jo Roberts Marchant

Alvina “Vina” Jo Roberts Marchant went to be with her Lord and Savior on Mon., Oct. 28, 2013, in Boerne at the age of 68. She was born in Wellington, Texas on March 20, 1945, to Francis and Hughetta Roberts. She is preceded in death by her parents.
