Arlton Hale DeVaney

October 30, 2013

Memorial service for Arlton Hale DeVaney was held Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Athens, Texas.

Mr. Devaney passed away on Oct. 23, 2013 at age 75. He was born in Coahoma, Texas to Charles Houston DeVaney and Bama Theo DeVaney on Feb. 25, 1938. He was raised in West Texas on a cotton farm.
Arlton graduated from Coahoma High School and served in the U.S. Army.

David English

David English, former longtime employee at the Big Spring Refinery, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, in the company of his family. Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, in Snyder, Texas, at the London Bleu, 3011 College Avenue.

Jessie M. Nelson, 94, of San Angelo, formerly of Big Spring died Sunday Oct. 27, 2013, at Park Plaza in San Angelo. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Leland Hyatt, 86, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, in a Colorado City nursing home. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

Donation will allow Howard College dental program to expand

During their regular board of trustees meeting Monday, Howard College officials announced plans that will be taking their well-known dental hygiene program a step further, thanks in great part to a generous donation from Marie Hall.

The gift will fund three phases of development that will include support for a dental faculty chair and a dental assisting faculty chair, faculty development and student support services, a simulation lab, extended online education courses, and satellite clinical sites.

Student numbers down a bit at HC; not unexpected

While implementation of a three-phase plan to enhance the dental hygiene program at Howard College dominated trustees’ attention Monday, the board addressed other issues as well, including enrollment.

Student enrollment is down 9 percent district wide, said college officials, who presented certified fall enrollment numbers. Contact hours — numbers the state uses to determine funding — Big Spring, Lamesa and San Angelo campus saw an 11 percent drop while the SouthWest Institute for the Deaf showed a 3 percent increase.

Horace E. Tubb

Horace E. Tubb, 89, passed away at his home Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Joey Bacon, Crossroads Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Prescott, Ark., but was a lifelong resident of Big Spring. He married Jewel Moore June 25, 1944 in Big Spring, Texas.

Rosa Lee Allred

Rosa Lee Allred, 93, of Big Spring, died Sunday, October 27, 2013, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at the funeral home.

Rosa Lee was born Aug. 27, 1920, in Jasper County, Texas and married W.R. "Reedy" Allred Nov. 5, 1938, in Big Spring, Texas. He preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1992.

Forsan band qualifies for state marching contest

And the band plays on.

Forsan High School Band steps on to state while the Coahoma High School ended it's marching contest season Saturday.

Earning top honors at Area Class 1A contest, Forsan qualified for its eighth consecutive trip to University Interscholastic League (UIL) state contest under the leadership of band director of Jim Rhodes. The band placed first in the finals held in Ratliff Stadium, Odessa.

Coahoma band had a little further to go — Amarillo — for Class 2A Area competition.
