Big Spring City Council members will consider a proposed rate increase by Atmos Energy when they meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers 307 E. Fourth.
Atmos officials have proposed increasing the natural gas company's rates by 18.41 percent for residential customers and 4.24 percent for commercial entities in the company's West Texas division, which includes Big Spring, Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, Amarillo and several other municipalities. If approved, this will increase the company's revenue by more than $12 million annually.
H-E-B is giving area kids a chance to satisfy their artistic side, sweet tooth and love of Halloween, all at the same time. As an added bonus, they'll be giving to a good cause.
The grocery store will be the site of a âpumpkin patchâ decorating event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.
Gale Pittman, who heads up the store's bakery, said the produce department will line up pumpkins along the Lancaster Street side of the store. Children can then purchase and decorate a pumpkin for $3.48, with the proceeds going to the local United Way.
Jessie Lee White, 99, of Stanton, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at her residence. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at the Evergreen Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. David Harp officiating.
Jessie was born Dec. 12, 1913 to Perry and Nellie Martin in Palestine, Texas.
She is survived by four sons, Edward (Sonny) Henson and wife, Teri of Stanton, Earl Henson of Spokane, Wash., Bobby Henson and wife, Carol of Ben Brook, and Jimmy Shaw and wife, Linda of Midland; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
George V. Hernandez, 45, of Big Spring died Saturday Oct. 19, 2013 at his residence. Vigil service will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernard L. Gully officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Jesus "Jesse" Armendariz, 54, of Big Spring died Saturday Oct. 19, 2013 at Midland Memorial Hospital. Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
He was born Aug. 12, 1959, in Big Spring to Dora and Jose Armendariz. He was a lifetime resident of Big Spring. He married Erlinda Martinez Feb. 12, 2000, in Big Spring. He worked for Fiberglass Systems in Big Spring and for Continental Products in Odessa.
Alejandro "Alex" Franco, 83, of Big Spring, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at his residence. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel. The drought is over. The Steer faithful â as well as Head Coach Phillip Ritchey â finally celebrated a district win after two straight seasons without one, as Big Spring (5-2, 1-1) defeated Snyder 42-14 at Memorial Stadium.
âI feel a ton lighter,â Ritchey said of the win. âIt's a big load off our backs. It was a humongous win for us. It was one of the best games we've played in a long time. From start to finish. We picked up momentum at the Wylie game and brought it over to the this one. Hopefully it will keep snowballing.â

Milton Mow, 73, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Chaplain Cherise Felty officiating.
Milton was born Jan. 27, 1940, in Coleman, Texas, and married Nell Benson Jan. 18, 1964, in Big Lake.
