Flu season approaching

Leaves are changing and a chill is in the air — not to mention coughs, runny noses and sneezes. Fall is here, and with it comes the advent of flu season, which means it’s time to get your annual flu immunization.

Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious cases can result in hospitalization or death.

Larry James, 59, of Big Spring, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Texas Specialty Hospital in Lubbock. The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Murder suspect held here on $850, 000 bond

A Stanton man remains in custody after being charged with murder in the early Monday shooting death of 26-year-old Carlos Guerrero,

Sean Smith, 22, of 417 N. College in Stanton, is in custody at the Howard County Law Enforcement Center this morning in lieu of $850,000 bond, officials said.

Smith was charged with murder in the shooting death of Guerrero, which occurred shortly after midnight Monday.

Commissioners name Halfmann peace justice

Howard County commissioners named Quail Dobbs’ long-time secretary to replace him as justice of the peace for the Sand Springs-Coahoma area.

Linda Halfmann, who has worked in the Coahoma office of Dobbs — the incumbent JP for Precinct 2, Place 2 — for the past six years, was selected for the position during the commissioners’ regular meeting Tuesday morning.

She will serve the remainder of Dobbs’ term, which runs through Jan. 1, 2015, County Judge Mark Barr said.

Carlos Valario Guerrero

Carlos Valario Guerrero, 26, of Big Spring, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m., today, Oct. 16, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
Carlos was born on Dec. 31, 1986, in Big Spring, Texas. He graduated from Synder High School in 2005. He was a driller for Robinson Drilling. He was Catholic.

James "Fats" Johnson, 68, of Big Spring, Texas, died Thursday Oct. 10, 2013, at Midland Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Thursday 10 a.m. at Myers & Smith Chapel with Holston Banks and Marcos Zuniga officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Charles D. Herring, Jr., 96, of Big Spring, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at the Mt. Olive Memorial Park Chapel with the Rev. Bill Ivins, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.

He was born Oct. 8, 1917, in Big Spring, Texas and married Mozelle James July 5, 1941, in Big Spring, Texas.

Funeral services for Alvis Kenneth Harry, 78, of North Richland Hills will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Shady Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Weever to officiate. Burial will follow at Smithfield Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Alvis Harry, loving husband, father granddad and friend entered his heavenly home Oct. 14, 2013. He was born Jan. 26, 1935, to S.M. and Faye Woods Harry in Lamesa, Texas. He worked construction many years and retired from Birdville Independant School District in 2001.
