Is the drought over?
That was the response from John Grant, general manager of the Colorado River Municipal Water District, when asked about the recent rainfall and the rise in lake levels according to the CRMWD weekly report.
â€śWe were fortunate last fall,â€ť said Grant about the runoff Big Spring received at the end of September. As far as the drought is concerned Grant said that we are not quite out of the woods yet.
â€śWe're in better shape than we were last year, but we have a long way to go,â€ť the director explained.
A storm is coming.
The United Way of Big Spring and Howard County, with the assistance of Bill Price and his helicopter, will host the West Texas Ball Storm, a unique community event involving a deluge of golf balls being dropped from 100 feet in the air via helicopter.
Golf balls can be purchased at the United Way office located at 215 West Third Street or from any United Way board member.
The price of a ball is $20 each or six can be purchased for $100. Each ball will be numbered and collected to be dropped from a helicopter at 100 feet onto Blankenship field above the pin.
Joseph B Gist, 39, died Sept. 24, 2013, at Midland Memorial Hospital. A vigil service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Calvary Baptist Church, 1165 Minter Lane, Abilene, Texas.
He was born Dec. 10, 1974, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Amanda Gist of Big Spring, Texas.
Funeral services for Florence Lavern Hitchcock will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Meador-Clement-Keel Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Burnett, pastor of Era Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hitchcock died Sept. 25, 2013, at Denton Regional Hospital at the age of 71.
Two Big Spring men who allegedly participated in the armed robbery of a local store in June were among 13 people indicted during Tuesday's session of the Howard County Grand Jury.
Eufemio Ortiz Jr., 21, and Sunday C. Luna, 26, both currently incarcerated in the Howard County Detention Center, were indicted on first-degree aggravated robbery charges for their alleged roles in the Aug. 22 stick-up of the Boost Mobile store on FM 700.
Big Spring City Council has done an about-face on plans to increase garbage collection fees this year.
Two weeks after tentatively approving monthly increases of $3 for residences and $5 for businesses, the council voted 4-to-3 to nix the idea during their regular meeting Tuesday evening.
Marcus Fernandez, the lone council member to vote against the fee increase two weeks ago, was joined by colleagues Carmen Harbour, Glen Carrigan and Marvin Boyd in defeating the measure. Mayor Larry McLellan and council members Bobby McDonald and Raul Benavides voted for the fee increase.
Janice Irene Danford, 57, of Georgetown, Texas passed away on Sept. 21, 2013, of recurring cancer, after nearly 10 years in remission.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, in the Chapel of Ramsey Funeral Home with Shane Blackshear officiating.
Abigail Daisy "Abby" Valencia, 17, of Big Spring died Saturday Sept. 21, 2013, at University Medical Center in Lubbock. A vigil service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Deacon Johnny Arguello officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
She was born Sept. 23, 1995, to Maria Magdalena Enriquez and Adam Valencia Sr., in Big Spring. She was a Catholic and a lifetime resident of Big Spring. She was employed by Whataburger and Wendy's restaurants.
