Lillian Inez Brantley

October 5, 2013

Lillian Inez Brantley, of Stanton, Texas, died Oct. 3, 2013, in a Bronte, Texas nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at the Evergreen Cemetery Chapel in Stanton, Texas.
She was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Wills Point and attended school in Holliday, Texas, where she participated in sports and many activities.
Lillian married Harold Brantley of Woodson, May 27, 1944, in Holliday and raised her two children in Holliday, Odessa, Texas and Stanton. She was an active member of the Church of Christ.

Pauline Schuelke

Pauline Schuelke, 94, of Ackerly, Texas, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in a Lubbock hospice facility. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at the First Bapitst Church of Ackerly with Dr. Stan Blevins, Jeff Scott and Corbin Young, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at the funeral home.
She was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Hoxie, Texas and married Fred Schuelke April 27, 1939, in Georgetown, Texas. He preceded her in death Feb. 17, 2002.

Ewinva Doyle "Bo" Hail

Ewinva Doyle "Bo" Hail, 69, of Big Spring, Texas, formerly of Odessa, Texas, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at his residence. Private family services will be held at a later date.
He was born May 15, 1944, in Odessa to Allene Irene and Ewing Elias Hail. He was a lifetime resident of Odessa before moving to Big Spring in 2013. He married Deanna June Price Jan. 7, 1978, in Odessa. She preceded him in death Dec. 2003. He worked in dirt contracting and was a heavy equipment operator.

DRA getting ready for Christmas on Main Street

When you think Christmas parade, don't forget Christmas on Main Street, a family focused event designed to enhance the season's festivities.
Christmas on Main Street is put on by the Downtown Revitalization Association and takes place — on Main Street, obviously — immediately following the Big Spring Herald Lighted Christmas Parade, set for the evening of Saturday, Dec. 7.
“Children will have an opportunity to visit with Santa, get their photo taken and get a free gift,” said Debbie Rupard, DRA secretary.

Firefighters to teach safety to students

October 5, 2013

October is National Fire Prevention Month and the Big Spring Fire Department will be spreading the message of fire safety to this area's smallest residents.
Beginning Monday, BSFD Fire Marshal Carl Condray and others in the department will visit area elementary schools to give students practical lessons on fire safety.

Rabid bat discovered; no major threat

October 5, 2013

Big Spring Police Department is notifying the public that on Thursday, its animal control division captured a bat that has tested to be infected with rabies.
Other bats were captured the same week and were also sent for testing. Tests on all the other bats were confirmed negative for rabies, said Det. Sgt. Tony Everett, BSPD public information officer.

Tumbleweed Smith to be inducted into Texas Trail of Fame

Tumbleweed Smith of Big Spring, newspaper columnist and producer of The Sound of Texas radio series, will be inducted into the Fort Worth Stockyards Trail of Fame on Oct. 26.

The organization recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the creation and preservation of the western way of life and western heritage. The program has recognized 130 individuals since its inception in 1997.

Firefighters’ memorial ceremony set Saturday

Bells will ring out across the nation this weekend in remembrance of firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

Bells Across America, a national ceremony honoring fallen firefighters, will be held locally at 10 a.m. Saturday at the entrance of First United Methodist Church.

Roy Clayton Shaffer (Buddy), 71, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, in a local hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.., Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at Trinity Baptist Church with Dr. Randy Cotton and Associate Pastor Joey Bacon officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
