Jimmy F. Fierro, 77, of Big Spring, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Domingo H. Rios

September 7, 2013

Domingo H. Rios, 87, of Big Spring died at his residence Thursday Sept. 5, 2013. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Sunday Sept. 8, 2013, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Msgr. Bernard Gully officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Rebecca Renee Arocha, of San Antonio, Texas and John Allen Avant, of Big Spring will exchange wedding vows Oct. 12, 2013.
Rebecca is the daughter of Lisa and Lupe Lomas and Ann and Fidencio Arocha, all of San Antonio, Texas. She is a 2011 graduate of Big Spring High School and is employed at Kwikies as a cashier.
John is the son of Ms. Janet Avant and Mr. and Mrs. Don Avant. He graduated from homeschool in May 2005.
He is employed as the manager of Kwikies.

Pam Jordan

September 7, 2013

Pam passed away on Aug. 28, 2013, in Denton, Texas. Pam was born on Aug. 6, 1959 in Big Spring, Texas, to Jim and Betty Jordan.
She graduated from Greenwood High School and then earned an associate’s degree as an emergency medical Technician. In 1981, Pam graduated from the Permian Basin Police Academy. She served as police officer for 20 years and received numerous certifications, awards, recognitions and promotions to include city employee of the year.

Pace’Lei Grace Lance, a girl, was born Aug. 12, 2013, at 12:17 p.m. She weighed 5 pounds 11 ounces and was 19 inches long.
She is the daughter of Angela and Blake Lance of Coahoma. Maternal grandparents are Donna and David Pace of Big Spring.
Paternal grandparents are Paul Lance of Coahoma and Lonnie and Vernette Hill of Big Spring.
Pace’Lei was welcomed home by big brother Dylan Lance.

Forsan ISD to consider buying two homes

FORSAN — School trustees here will consider purchasing housing for school personnel when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room.
Forsan Independent School District currently provides 14 “extremely” low-rent homes for extra-duty personnel — coaches, band directors and other teachers who spend a lot of extra time on campus. Now, the school board will explore the possibility of adding two more homes to the list.

Commissioners to approve budget, tax rate

Howard County commissioners are expected to give final approval to the budget for the coming fiscal year when they meet at 10:30 a.m. Monday on the third floor of the county courthouse.
Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the new budget and tax rate during the meeting, then are expected to vote on approval of the budget. The tax rate will be formally adopted Sept. 23.
The proposed county budget will feature several new expenditures, including $500,000 to pay the county's share of costs for a new landfill and an increase of more than $240,000 to help pay for ambulance services.

Brother, sister speak of love, hope

Love was in the air at the Dorothy Garret Coliseum Thursday night.
“The Love Chromosome,” sponsored by the Healthy Women Foundation Speaker Series, in partnership with Scenic Mountain Medical Center's Healthy Woman program, featured motivational speaker Derrick Tennant and his sister Julie.
“The series has been very successful,” said Howard College President, Dr. Cheryl Sparks. “It has gained a following. I see a lot of familiar faces here tonight.”
The series spotlights people who have overcome obstacles in their lives and have had some measure of success.

‘Warriors’ lining up for triathlon

If you want to be a Comanche Warrior now is the time to show your stuff.

The 2013 Comanche Warrior Triathlon will be held Saturday in Comanche Trail Park and it's not too late to register, according to event organizer Debbie Wegman.

“If they haven't registered yet we'll have registration Friday (today) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.,” said Wegman. “We have about 50 registered so far.”

CHS first area school to stage homecoming

COAHOMA — Football, pageantry and dress-up days at school — it must be homecoming week.

Coahoma High School became the first Howard County school system to celebrate homecoming, which culminates tonight with the crowning of the homecoming queen.

Five senior girls will vie for the honor. They are:

• Kyla Clinton, daughter of Randy and Tricia Clinton.
• Savannah Neff, daughter of Cindy and Clay Smith and David Neff.
• Breann Castillo, daughter of Raul and Cheryl Castillo.
• Sarah Melendez, daughter of Isidro and Teresa Melendez.
• Shayla Martin, daughter of Danny and Kim Martin.

The Forsan High School Buffaloes and Miles Bulldogs will get the playoff atmosphere started a bit...
