Robbery suspect sought

Law enforcement officials are searching for a masked man who allegedly robbed a 7-Eleven convenience store during the early morning hours Sunday.

According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the Big Spring Police Department, the suspect entered the 7-Eleven convenience store in the 900 block of Willia just after 1 a.m. Sunday.

Paving the way

Driving past road work projects on Third and Fourth streets may be an inconvenience, but rest assured it's not exactly a walk in the park for the workers involved, either.

Paving just a small section of one of Big Spring's downtown streets is hot, smelly and exacting work, requiring the use of high-dollar specialized equipment and the labors of more than a dozen workers at a time, all to lay a strip of two-inch deep asphalt the length of a city block.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• JOSE LUIS RIVERA, 25, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd. Apt. 303, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• SAM PENA JR., 33, of 208 N. Nolan, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• JUAN GILBERT HINOJOSA, 41, of 610 Linda Lane, was arrested Monday on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
• JOSHUA DAVID DECKER, 23, of Stanton, Texas, was arrested Monday on warrants for speeding and failure to appear.

Virnette Reid Fowler

Virnette Reid Fowler, 94, of Midland, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, in a local hospital. A private family inurnment will be in Big Spring.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home of Midland.

Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Fowler of Midland and Cynthia Wilson and husband, Stephen of Denton; one son, David Fowler and wife, DiAnn of Midland; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Hawks to make debut at Region V tourney

ODESSA — The Hawks fought through a season of adversity, but now they can breathe for a moment — Howard College baseball will be represented at the Region V Tournament in Grand Prairie. But first, they had to get past Western Junior College Athletic Conference rival Odessa College.

It was the epitome of a must-win game Saturday as the Hawks' postseason fate would be determined by the outcome of the final meeting of a four-game series — as well as the regular season — between the Hawks and the Wranglers.

Council to discuss city manager position

The Big Spring City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday evening to discuss a a short list of items, including an executive session to consider the duties and evaluation of the city manager and to deliberate regarding Colonial Hills Estates.

According to the meeting agenda, District 6 Councilman Marvin Boyd is expected to deliver an update from the city's newly appointed employee retention committee, while Interim Police Chief Chad Williams will discuss special recognition plaques planned for the Troy M. Hogue Joint Law Enforcement Center.

Summertime fun on Boys and Girls Club menu

As area students hungrily await the end of the school year, many parents are faced with a child care dilemma during the summer months.

However, the Salvation Army's Boys and Girls Club has an answer, as the local charity prepares to kick off its annual summer program June 10.

Boys and Girls Club program director Duane Shackelford said the program is expected to serve approximately 120 to 140 area children between the ages of 5 years and 18 years, and with a new facility ready to go, the program will have even more to offer this year.

• MARTIN LEE BENTACUR, 45, of 215 N.E. Ninth St., was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
