United Way gearing up for campaign kickoff Saturday

The local United Way campaign won't begin in earnest until September, but officials will kick off the drive Saturday, they said.

Executive Director Sandy Stewart said the kickoff for the 69th annual campaign will begin at 6 p.m. at the Big Spring Country Club and will feature live music, food and a silent auction.

“I just want to say the we are all looking forward to another successful campaign with the strong support of our community,” Stewart said. “I am so proud to be a part of an organization and a community that does so much for so many.”

BSISD struggling to employ enough teachers

When it comes to hiring teachers, it's definitely a seller's market.

Big Spring Independent School District officials are still looking for teachers to fill some classroom slots as the new school year approaches.

Some BSISD classes will start the school year with part-time or temporary instructors, Director of Curriculum and Instruction Ann McClarty told trustees during their Thursday meeting.

Colette Schraeder, 92, of St. Lawrence,died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Father Raj officiating. Interment will follow at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery.

A rosary service will be at 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
She was born Feb. 20, 1921, in Ballinger, Texas, and married A.W. Schraeder Nov. 18, 1940, in Olfen, Texas. He preceded her in death Dec. 23, 2002.

Viola Gamboa Rodriguez, 70, of Big Spring died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at her residence. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Teresa Silva Rocha, 70, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, in a Midland hospital. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

Domestic disturbance turns violent, 3 people seriously injured

Three Big Spring residents were seriously injured during a domestic disturbance that turned extremely violent Wednesday evening.

Big Spring police responded to the rear area of 406 Dallas in reference to a “shots fired” call shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday and discovered three people seriously injured, Big Spring Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Tony Everett said.

CRMWD officials deny giving V.V. Water Company ’cold shoulder’

The Colorado River Municipal Water District board of directors met Wednesday morning to discuss a number of issues, including potential litigation regarding tortious interference with a contract stemming from recent meetings and presentations by Beeville-based V.V. Water Company LLC.

The company — represented by John Littlejohn, owner and chief scientist and Joe Carter, managing director — made a public presentation at the Hall Center for the Arts last week and a second one Tuesday night during the meeting of the Big Spring City Council.

Bill Estes, known to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Papa, passed on to a better place Aug. 9, 2013. Though he will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him, we know Bill is in Heaven looking back on his life and saying, with his usual grin, “my cup runneth over.”

Clarence D. Hays

Clarence D. Hays, 82, of St. Pete, Fla., formerly of Big Spring passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at his residence after a two-year battle with lung cancer.

He was born July 16, 1931, in Mitchell County, Texas, to Tennie and W.D. Hays. Clarence was a member of United Methodist Church in Coahoma. He graduated from Coahoma High School in 1948. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and retired July 31, 1971. While serving our country, he received three commendation medals.
