MARTIN COUNTY â€” Two men fell to their deaths Monday morning at a location in northern Martin County â€” approximately halfway between Big Spring and Lamesa â€” while working on power lines, tethered to a helicopter, according to local law enforcement officials.
David Edward Oliveira, 26, of Turlock, Calif., and Christopher Geoffrey Breed, 27, of Moscow, Idaho, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, near County Roads 4501 and 4200, according to officials with the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
Howard College trustees gave tentative approval to across-the-board pay raises for district personnel during a combination budget workshop-regular meeting Tuesday.
College employees would see their annual income increase by at least $1,200 under the new budget, which will not be formally approved until Aug. 27.
Faculty can expect annual salary increases of between $1,389 and $1,857, depending on their contracts, while other employees will see significant pay raises also, College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks said.
Juan M. Rodriguez, 85, of Big Spring died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
A vigil service was held Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
He was born March 30, 1928, in Big Spring, Texas, and married Maria Escovedo on Oct. 29, 1954, in Big Spring, Texas. She preceded him in death Jan. 26, 2005.
Don Yates, 86, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, in Weatherford. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at Victory Baptist Church. Visitation will be held 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at White's Funeral Home in Weatherford. Interment will follow at Annetta Cemetery.
Don was born June 12, 1927, in Big Spring to Arthur and Nettie Yates. He spent most of his life in Big Spring, before moving to Weatherford 13 years ago. Don was an active member of the Victory Baptist Church.
Beulah Mae Stoeger, 90, of Odessa, formerly of Big Spring died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, in an Odessa hospital. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

CLYDE â€” Kelly Suzanne Barnes McElyea died at the age of 51 on Aug. 3, 2013, of cervical cancer at her home in Clyde, Texas.
A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at Sweet Fellowship Church of God In Christ, 2106 Shellhorse Rd., Dallas, Texas 75241.
Kelly was born Feb. 11, 1962, in Big Spring, Texas. She attended school in El Paso, Texas, and moved to Duncanville, Texas, in 1977. She lived in Arkansas with her sons from her first marriage and her youngest son was born in Arkansas.

He was born Aug. 5, 1951, in Big Spring, Texas, and married Margaret Resendez on June 18, 1983, in Fort Davis, Texas.
Jowili "Mama Jo" Taylor Etchison went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born in Kiowa County, Okla., on Dec. 26, 1919, to Clyde and Joe Emma Clare Taylor. They moved to Littlefield, Texas, when she was 12 years old.
