Heading into the final day of early voting, polling totals for the Big Spring City Council District 5 election have gone pretty much as expected, officials said.
Early voting ends today in the runoff election, which pits Raul Benavides vs. J.D. Smith to see who will succeed Craig Olson as District 5 council member.
As of Friday afternoon, 93 persons had cast early ballots in the election, while another 12 had requested mail-in ballots, Howard County Election Administrator Saundra Bloom said.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• TEKIA WILLIAMS, 30, of 705 Wyoming, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• JOLANDA JIMENEZ GONZALES, 43, of Ackerly, Texas, was arrested Monday on warrants for defective tail lamp, failure to maintain financial responsibility, expired motor vehicle inspection certificate and a warrant from another agency.
• TOMMY BILLALBA JR., 24, of 3614 Hamilton, was arrested Monday on five warrants from other agencies.
GRANBURY — Jan Tom Whatley, born Oct. 31, 1953, to Tommy and Deidra Whatley, passed away peacefully May 30, 2013, after a six-year battle with bile duct cancer. He bravely fought to stay in this world.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at Wiley Funeral Home in Granbury, Texas.
He was a graduate of the University of Texas and held the MAI designation of the Appraisal Institute. Jan was mentored as an appraiser 28 years ago by Wendell Pyles. They partnered up to form the Pyles Whatley Corporation, which specializes in commercial real estate.
Norma Fraley, 52, of Big Spring died Sunday, June 2, 2013, in a Midland hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Mona Lue Tonn officiating.
She was born July 23, 1960, in Fort Worth, Texas. She was a homemaker and moved to Big Spring in 1998. Norma graduated from Howard College with an associates degree in computer science technology. She worked at J.A.L. Contractors and was an integral part of the business. She was lovingly referred to as the "Receipt Nazi."
Ernie Paul, 44, of Big Spring died Saturday, June 1, 2013, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

With temperatures already reaching 100 degrees in West Texas, the local Salvation Army is doing its part to help the area's low income families with its annual fan drive.
“The demand has been high and we haven't even officially entered the summer season,” Ada Lafler, a social worker with the local charity, said. “We don't have any fans left in stock and we gave out our last one more than a week ago.”

• DYLAN QUADE WEAVER, 18, of 1310 Baylor, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ANGELICA ANDRYSSA MONTES, 18, of Las Cruces, N.M., was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• AARON DAVID CORDOVA, 37, of Westminster, Colo., was arrested Sunday on two warrants from other agencies.
• QUENTIN JAMES AUSBIE, 23, of 1207 Donley, was arrested Sunday on a charge of hindering officers discharging official duties.

Odessa (Grandmother) Boothe, 93, of Big Spring went to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, June 1, 2013. She fought a good fight; she finished the course; she kept the faith.
