In an emergency situation, few things are as important as having a way to get reliable information and Crossroads residents have a new way to do just that.
Officials with the Big Spring Police Department recently announced the creation of a system that will allow residents to receive critical information about the community by text message or e-mail.
Crews from across Howard County joined in a city wide drill conducted by the Howard County Emergency Management team this month.
Involved were Scenic Mountain Medical Center, Big Spring State Hospital, George H. Oâ€™Brien Jr. VA Medical Center, Big Spring Police Department, Big Spring Emergency Medical Service, Howard County Sheriff's Department, Air-Evac LifeTeam and West Texas Centers. Also assisting were members of the Church of the Nazarene youth group.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
â€¢ JASON SCOTT EDWARDS, 24, of 1208 Harding, was arrested Monday on two warrants from other agencies and a charge of shoplifting â€“ more than $50 and less than $500.
â€¢ AVEL ABREO RAMIREZ, 66, of 1512 Wood, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
â€¢ FRANK HERNANDEZ, 43, of 311 N. Aylesford, was arrested Monday on a charge of theft â€“ more than $50 and less than $1,500.
Dena Rae Perez-Ledbetter, 39, of Greenwood died Saturday, June 15, 2013, in an Odessa hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
She was born Sept. 22, 1973, in Midland, Texas, and married Ron Ledbetter on April 25, 1992, in Big Spring, Texas.
Richard Gilmore, 77, of Coahoma died Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Parkview Nursing Center. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church with burial at Coahoma Cemetery.
He was born Dec. 9, 1935, in Howard County to Flossie and Lawrence Gilmore. He was a lifetime resident of Howard County and married Jane Graham on Oct. 30, 1935, in Coahoma. He worked for the City of Coahoma and Howard County and later as a truck driver and service technician in the oil field.
Gerald Don Cummings died at the Sierra Medical Center in El Paso on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Gerald was born Dec. 12, 1943, in Brady, Texas, to Jesse and Irene Cummings. He was the oldest of five children, having two brothers and two sisters.
Juanita R. Marquez, 76, of Big Spring died Monday, June 17, 2013, at Parkview Nursing Center. Vigil services will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
She was born June 26, 1936, to Margarita and Pablo Ramirez in Big Spring and was a lifetime resident of Big Spring. She worked for the Coahoma School Cafeteria for 35 years and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Richard Corser, 33, of Midland died Saturday, June 15, 2013, at his residence. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Big Spring. No other services are planned.
Richard was born May 10, 1980, in Midland and was a roughneck in the oilfield.
Survivors include his parents, Donna and Frank Coates of Big Spring; one brother, David William Corser of Austin; and one sister, Sherri McConney and husband Sean of Baltimore, Md.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mark Corser.
The Big Spring City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday evening which is expected to include interviews with candidates currently vying for the municipality's city manager position, as longtime manager Gary Fuqua prepares for retirement.
The meeting was called for by the Big Spring City Council during its June 11 meeting, part of an ongoing effort to fill the position currently being handled by Interim City Manager Todd Darden.
Law enforcement officials remained tight-lipped Monday morning regarding the arrest early Saturday morning of a Midland man on a charge of attempted murder.
Joshua Aaron Kirby, 28, of 1302 S. Connell in Midland, Texas, was arrested early Saturday morning in the 700 block of W. Interstate Highway 20 â€” near the TravelCenters of America Truck Stop â€” on a charge of attempted murder.
Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the Big Spring Police Department, declined to comment on the arrest, citing an open investigation.
