Henry Holguin, 54, of Big Spring died Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at his residence. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Natalie Peurifoy, 90, of Big Spring died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, in an Amarillo hospice facility. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Felipe "Phillip" Saiz, 40, of Big Spring died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, in Howard County. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Tuesday's special meeting of the Big Spring City Council proved to be special indeed. Following 30- to 45-minute interviews with the remaining three city manager candidates and a lengthy deliberation, the Big Spring City Council voted unanimously late Tuesday evening to grant Todd Darden the position of city manager.
â€śWe had 34 candidates when we started,â€ť said newly elected mayor Larry McLellan. During the June 11 meeting that number was reduced to three.â€ť
Big Spring school trustees will begin hammering out details of the district's next budget when they meet at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.
Budget crafting is never a pleasant undertaking, but it may be worse Big Spring ISD officials this year. As things stand now, the district is looking for ways to make do with about $1 million less in state appropriations this coming fiscal year.

â€˘ BRAD WAYNE DUGAN JR., 29, of 4614 Aspen, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of possession of a dangerous drug.
â€˘ OSCAR ORTIZ, 24, of 1401 N. Highway 87 Apt. 1002, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to appear.
â€˘ ASHLEY ANN TAYLOR, 33, of 1112 Sycamore, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for parent contributing to the non-attendance of a minor.
Richard Gilmore, 77, of Coahoma died Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Parkview Nursing Center. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Midway Baptist Church with burial at Coahoma Cemetery.
He was born Dec. 9, 1935, in Howard County to Flossie and Lawrence Gilmore. He was a lifetime resident of Howard County and married Jane Graham on Oct. 30, 1955, in Coahoma. He worked for the City of Coahoma, Howard County and later as a truck driver and service technician in the oil field.
Big Springâ€™s Canyon Atkinson, a seventh grade student and son of Shannon and Belinda Crenshaw, has been riding bulls since he was seven years old. Atkinson recently qualified for the worldâ€™s largest junior rodeo, where he will compete against the best in the world.
The National Junior High Finals Rodeo will take place in Gallup, N.M., beginning June 23. Atkinson will join about 2,000 other young buckaroos at the yearly event, which features participants from 41 U.S. States, five Canadian provinces and Australia.
Janie Fierro, 65, of Big Spring died Sunday, June 16, 2013, in Conroe, Texas. Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Charles Floyd Archer, 70, of Big Spring died Monday, June 17, 2013, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Memorial Park with military honors.
He was born July 7, 1942, to Thelma and Floyd Archer in Dallas. He excelled at baseball and attended college on a baseball scholarship. He served in the United States military and was stationed in Germany as a Morse code interpreter. He worked in retail sales and management.
