Closures scheduled for MLK Day

January 18, 2014

Many area offices and agencies will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Day which commemorates the birthday and life's work of the civil rights leader and proponent of peaceful protest.

Filing period nears for city, school elections

January 18, 2014

The time is fast approaching for prospective candidates to toss their hats into the ring for upcoming city and school elections. Candidacy filing periods for both the Big Spring City Council and Big Spring Independent School District Board of Trustees elections this May begin Jan. 29 and run through Feb. 28, officials said.

Quail Dobbs

Quail Dobbs, 72, of Coahoma, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Trinity Baptist Church in Big Spring with Eddy Pitchford, Russ Mullins and Tumbleweed Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Coahoma Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.

He was born Aug. 27, 1941 in Albany, TX and married Judy McGuire Feb. 21, 1964, in Clovis, New Mexico.

Phyllis Ann Scroggins

Phyllis Ann Scroggins, 71, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, in a Midland care center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with John Snider officiating. Interment will follow at Coahoma Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at the funeral home.

Doris Modean Ferguson

Doris Modean (Moo Moo) Ferguson, 90, of Urband, Mo. passed away Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014.
Doris was born Aug. 3, 1924 in Quanah Texas to James Walters and Verdie Mavous (McNutt) Landers.
She married Willie Ferguson Aug. 6,1938, in Quanna, Texas.

Jerline Averitt, 87, died Friday Jan. 17, 2014. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.

Steers holds off Greenwood rally

Big Spring, backed by a solid outing from Ty Sealy, kept its dreams of earning a berth in the Class 3A state basketball playoffs alive and healthy on Friday by pounding out a nail-biting 53-50 win over the Greenwood Rangers.

Lady Rangers stun Big Spring

The Greenwood Lady Rangers did what few teams have managed to do this season. They slowed the Big Spring Lady Steers’ offense to a crawl.
Greenwood limited 17th-ranked Big Spring to just eight points in the first half on Friday and rolled to a stunning 35-26 victory in a key District 4-3A matchup.

Mustangs roll past Coahoma

COAHOMA - The Denver City Mustangs posted a huge run over the final four minutes of the first quarter on Friday night and cruised to a 71-27 win over the Coahoma Bulldogs on Friday night in District 4-2A action.
