Wylie subdues Big Spring girls

The Abilene Wylie Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 21-3 lead and then weathered a hot-shooting performance from Julianna Rodriguez to claim a 72-46 win over the Big Spring Lady Steers on Tuesday in Abilene.

Ty Sealy pumped in 22 points on Tuesday and helped the Big Spring Steers turn in a gutsy effort against the fifth-ranked Wylie Bulldogs in Abilene. Unfortunately for the Steers, it wasn’t enough.

Dr. Sparks’ contract extended

Extension of the college president’s contract and updates on existing projects were on tap at the Howard County Junior College District’s Board of Trustees meeting Monday.

Trustees began the meeting early by entering into executive session to evaluate the performance of college president Dr. Cheryl Sparks, who has served in the role for the past 22 years. She received another positive nod from trustees, who voted to extend her contract two years.

City workers repairing water main break

January 28, 2014

Cold weather has claimed its first water main of the year, city officials said this morning.

Residents in the Kentwood area of Big Spring were without water this morning after a 20-inch line broke around midnight, said Johnny Womack, interim public works director.

Repair work was expected to be complete by the end of the day, Womack added.

Addie Oliver, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Earline Davidson

Earline Davidson, 96, of Big Spring, died Sunday Jan. 26, 2014, at Kristi Lee Manor Nursing Home in Colorado City. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Kenneth McIntosh of First Christian Church officiating.

She was born Feb. 15, 1917, in Big Spring to Ollie and Eddie Rutledge. She was a lifelong resident of Big Spring. She was a homemaker and married I.H. “Buster” Davidson Sept.16, 1940, in Monahans, Texas. He preceded her in death June 4, 2007. She was a member of First Christian Church.

Guadalupe 'Lupe' Alcantar Ramirez

Guadalupe “Lupe” Alcantar Ramirez, 82, of Big Spring, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at her residence. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial following at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

She was born to Isabel and Andress Alcantar Sr. in Big Spring on Dec. 31, 1931. She was a lifelong resident of Big Spring. She worked at the Big Spring State Hospital kitchen. She married Ensebio Ramirez in Big Spring in March 1949. He preceded her in death Sept. 2, 1986.

Eddie Dwayne White

Eddie Dwayne White, 45, died Friday Jan. 24, 2014, at his residence. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Pastor Kevin Knudson of Life Church officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

He was born to Reba and Doyle White Oct. 24, 1968, in Big Spring. He worked in construction.

LL baseball sign-up dates are scheduled

Big Spring Little League will have sign ups on Feb. 1, Feb. 8, Feb. 15 and Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Spring City Plaza, formally the Big Spring Mall. Registration will also be held on Feb. 17–21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Registration is open to youths, ages 4-16.

HC women snap 3-game slide, 72-60

The streak is dead. Finally.
Gabby Gonzales pumped in a game-high 19 points and Bailey Wipff, Jericka Smith and Sarah Stinnett all added double-digit efforts on Monday and helped the Howard College Lady Hawks snap their recent three-game losing streak with a 72-60 romp over the Western Texas Lady Westerners at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
