Sondra ‘Yogi’ Williams

January 25, 2014

Sondra “Yogi” Williams, 50, of Big Spring, died Thursday Jan. 23, 2014, at her residence. Memorial services will be at a later date.
She was born in Big Spring Jan. 19, 1964, to Merly Mae and Oscar Jackson. She was a lifetime resident of Big Spring. She was a member of the GOGC New Life Church.

Dorothy Mildred Bloom

Dorothy Mildred Bloom passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at her residence. Dorothy wished her body be donated to medical science and research. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be at the Spring Creek Fellowship Church in Big Spring, Texas, Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at 3 p.m. Floral tributes may be sent to Dorothy’s family home at 1902 Goliad, and friends and other family are welcome and encouraged to gather there and visit as well.

Zachariah Dylan Perez

Funeral mass for Zachariah Dylan Perez of Lenorah, Texas, has been set for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at Grady High School Gym with Father Tio officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. A Rosary Vigil will be held Saturday and Sunday Jan. 25 and 26, 2014, at Stanton Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 7 p.m.
Zachariah was born Jan. 1, 1992, in Midland, Texas, and passed away Jan. 23, 2014, in Big Spring, Texas. Zachariah graduated in 2010 from Grady High School. He was a resident of Lenorah, Texas and worked for RK Pump and Supply.

Athol Jesse Atkins 'Jess'

Athol Jesse Atkins, 83, of Midland, passed away Saturday Jan. 18, 2014, at his home. He was born to T.B. and Era Atkins in Potter, Texas, on March 1, 1930. The Atkins family later moved to Big Spring, Texas, where the family established themselves in the community. Jess earned a B.A. from Baylor University and an M.A. from North Texas State University and later attended the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Following his studies, Jess returned to Big Spring where he owned and operated WesTex printing, formerly owned by his family.

Janis M. Halstead

January 25, 2014

Janis M. Halstead, 61, formerly of Big Spring and a long-time Tucson, Ariz., resident, passed peacefully and gracefully into the loving arms of God on Jan. 22, 2014, after a prolonged illness.
She was born Sept. 22, 1952, in Big Spring, Texas, to Richard and Betty Reagan. Janis was employed as the farm operations administrator at Al-Marah Arabians for 20 years and was a long-time member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She will always be remembered by friends, customers, co-workers and family for her joie-de-vivre, good heart, spirited nature and Christian compassion.

Local man indicted on murder charge

A Big Spring man was indicted on a murder charge following this week's session of the Howard County Grand Jury.

Lenorah man killed in traffic accident

January 24, 2014

A 22-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle collision early Thursday morning on Andrew’s Highway.

Zachariah Dylan Perez of Lenorah was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Justice of the Peace, Precent 2 Linda Halfmann, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Midland office.

FHS sets sights on Lone Star Cup

Forsan High School is having a banner year when it comes to its extra-curricular activities.

Current tallies place the Class A Howard County school in third position for the University Interscholastic League Lone Star Cup.

Evelyn L. Merrill Minear

January 24, 2014

Evelyn L. Merrill Minear passed away at her home Monday, Jan. 20, 2014. She was born Sept.16, 1913, to E.D. Merrill and Irene Merrill in Big Spring, Texas. The family moved to Baird, Texas, and then returned to Big Spring in 1926.

Evelyn attended school and worked for three years after completing high school in Big Spring. She attended the first IBM school in Dallas and returned to Big Spring and worked for Cosden Refinery Co. for 16 years.

Evelyn married Roy A. Minear of Midland, Texas, on Dec. 31, 1957, where they resided until his death in 1984, and she continued to reside.
