Rail facility nearing reality

January 23, 2014

Construction of a petrochemical product loading and transporting facility in Big Spring is getting closer to reality, board members with the Economic Development Corporation learned Tuesday evening.
Representatives from CBRE, the world's largest commercial real estate services firm, updated board members on plans for the “transloading” facility, which would be located on EDC-owned land east of the Alon Refinery.

One dead after Monday wreck

According to local news reports, one person was pronounced dead at a multi-vehicle accident Monday night that sent several people to area hospitals.

Cook-off to benefit monastery renovation project

Martin County’s annual Great Texas Soup Cook-Off, a benefit to restore the historic Carmelite Monastery, will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Martin County Community Center.

Gage Mims

January 21, 2014

Gage Mims, 56, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at his residence after a long battle with cancer. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel.

He was born March 22, 1957, to Bill and Bonnie “Reid” Mims in Big Spring. Except for a few years in Lubbock, he was a lifetime resident of Howard County. He graduated from Forsan High School and attended Howard College and Texas Tech. He was an avid football fan. He also loved hunting and fishing.

Mary Paredez

January 21, 2014

Mary Paredez, 86, of San Antonio, formerly of Big Spring, died Friday Jan. 17, 2014, at Heartland Nursing Home in San Antonio. Rosary services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with burial following at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

She was born to Pilar and Hijinio Roman on Oct. 23, 1927, in Pecos, Texas. She lived in the community since 1932. She married Pedro Paredez Sr., June 24, 1950 in Big Spring. He preceded her in death Nov. 14, 1992.

Charlene White

January 21, 2014

Charlene White, 74, of Big Spring, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, in a Stanton nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with Tommy Akin officiating.

She was born Oct. 16, 1939, in Carlsbad, N.M. and married Perry Lee White Sr. April 10, 1957 in Big Spring. He preceded her in death July 28, 2006.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be missed by all who knew her.

Lady Steers slide to No. 22 in poll

The Big Spring Lady Steers knew their loss last Friday to the Midland Greenwood Lady Rangers would cost them. On Monday, they found out just how much.
According to the latest rankings, the Lady Steers fell to No. 22 in the latest Class 3A rankings. The team had entered last week ranked at No. 17.

BSHS lands 4 on all-state team

The Big Spring High School Lady Steers added to their list of postseason accolades earlier this week when four members of their 2013 state-qualifying team were named to the Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A all-state team.

HC nabs ugly win over NMMI

Howard College head coach Scott Raines didn’t mince too many words when discussing his team’s performance on Tuesday against New Mexico Military Institute. The best way to describe ugly is to call it ugly.
And it was ugly.
