Breyman, Stevenson advance to state meet

J.T. Breyman and J.P. Stevenson made sure their tennis seasons didn’t come to a premature end this past weekend. The Forsan standouts punched their ticket to the Class A state tennis tournament by pounding out an impressive outing at the Region I-1A Tennis Championships on Thursday at South Plains College.

The members of the Big Spring High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will begin their attempts at qualifying for the state track meet on Friday morning when the 2014 Region I-3A Track and Field Championships get under way.

Green among Steers looking for success at Region I-3A track meet

On the track, Charles Green sprinted down the course at Rotary Field on Thursday with more than enough speed to cross the finish line in first place. On paper, however, he didn’t fair quite as well as District 3-4A Area Track and Field Championships.
A scorer’s mistake left Green listed as the seventh-place finisher in the 100-meter hurdles – and a long way from qualifying for the Region I-3A Track and Field Championships.
In the end, not even being seventh on a piece of paper could stop the BSHS senior from making his second straight trip to the regional meet.

Regional track meets set for this weekend

The Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan track and field teams will be in action this coming weekend, competing in their respective regional meets.
Big Spring will be competing in the Region I-3A meet on Friday and Saturday at Texas Tech University it Lubbock.
Forsan will be at South Plains College in Levelland to participate in the Region I-1A meet, while Coahoma will be competing in the Region I-2A meet at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.

Lady Hawks sweep four games from Lady Chaparrals

The Howard College Lady Hawks completed a four-game sweep of the Midland College Lady Chaparrals on Saturday by taking both ends of a doubleheader in Midland by the scores of 5-3 and 3-2, respectively.

Dignitaries to attend relief route ceremony

Dignitaries will descend on Big Spring Friday as the The Texas Department of Transportation, city of Big Spring and the 
Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the US 87 Truck Relief Route.

“This is an extremely important moment,” said Bill Crooker, a former long-time county commissioner and member of the Ports-to-Plains committee. “We have been members of the Ports-to-Plains since 1999, and we feel that is a valuable asset to be on the Ports-to-Plains route. This bypass will help relieve truck traffic in downtown Big Spring.”

18 indicted during grand jury session

The following individuals were indicted during the most recent session of the Howard County Grand Jury:

• Sherry Burchett, 34, 2609 Carleton, tampering with a governmental record (third degree felony).
• Lisa Ann Curry, 37, Robert Lee, possession of a controlled substance (state jail felony).
• John Flores Jr., 49, county detention center, evading arrest with a previous conviction (state jail felony).
• Stanley Lynn Fraley, 50, county detention center, two counts of burglary of a habitation (enhanced to first degree felony) and two counts of forgery (enhanced to third degree felony).

Donald 'Tink' Nichos

Donald “Tink” Nichols passed away after a brief illness Saturday, April 19, 2014, at 11:46 a.m. at Midland Memorial Hospital. He was born in Knott, Texas to John P. and Myrtie Nichols June 10, 1932, his mother’s birthday. He married Lucille Mundell June 24, 1950, and was blessed with almost 64 years of marriage and four children.

Terry W. Turner, 91, of Arlington, formerly of Big Spring, died Friday, April 18, 2014, at her home in Arlington. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel.

Margaret Easter, 92, of Big Spring, died Friday, April 18, 2014, at her residence. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.
