Pollard, Rodriguez selected to all-state volleyball squad

Erin Pollard and Julianna Rodriguez collected more than a few accolades for their prowess on the volleyball court after having led the Big Spring Lady Steers to a second straight trip to the regional tournament.
Now they have more.
Pollard and Rodriguez were both named to the 2014 Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Volleyball Team earlier this week. The two were among more than 150 high school players honored throughout the state in Class 2A through Class 6A.

County day in Austin deadline nears

The deadline to order shirts for Howard County Day at the state Capitol is fast approaching.

The specially-designed, black Howard County shirt costs $29 and the deadline to order one in time for the biennial event is Jan. 7. Orders are being taken at the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce building, 215 W. Third St.

Bid OK’d to tear down show barns

December 23, 2014

The old show barns at the Howard County fairgrounds are about to go the way of the dodo bird.

During their Monday meeting, county commissioners approved a $25,000 bid for the demolition of the three show barns adjacent to the main fair building in west Big Spring.

Commissioners awarded the bid to M. Hastey Construction of Plainview.

Holiday closings approach

December 23, 2014

City and county employees will receive a four-plus day weekend to observe the Christmas holidays.

Howard County offices will close at noon Christmas Eve, Wednesday, and stay closed until 8 a.m. Monday morning, Dec. 29.

On Christmas Eve, city of Big Spring offices will close at 3 p.m. and not reopen until 8 a.m., Monday, Dec. 29.

Salvation Army distributes toys

The Salvation Army distributed Angel Tree gifts Saturday at the Spring Town Plaza. This year, the SA campaign received donations for 580 children and seniors. Enrollment up at Coahoma ISD

Student enrollment continues to trend upward in the Coahoma Independent School District, school board trustees learned during their monthly meeting held last week.
According to Dr. Amy Jacobs, Coahoma ISD superintendent, 888 students were enrolled in the district at the end of November, an increase of 20 from the same time last year.

‘Dogs sink 11 treys in 54-41 win over Buffs

The Coahoma Bulldogs might want to petition AT&T for a sponsorship package after their performance against rival Forsan on Friday in the Coahoma gymnasium.

They did, after all, dial it up from long distance, sinking a season-high 11 three-pointers en route to claiming a 54-41 come-from-behind victory in a non-district matchup between the two Howard County programs.
