Meriam F. Sulatan

Meriam F. Sulatan, 80, of Big Spring, Texas, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 4319 Parkway, Big Spring. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 at the funeral home.
Meriam was born Nov. 18, 1933 in Laguna, Philippines and married Oseas Sulatan May 10, 1960. They moved to Big Spring in 1978 when she began working as an RN for the VA Medical Center.

Rena 'Bo' McCoy

Rena “Bo” McCoy, 76, of Big Spring, Texas, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, in Brownfield, Texas. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Myers & Smith Chapel, with the Rev. Holston Banks officiating.

Guinn inks with Hardin-Simmons

For the last four seasons, Kelsie Guinn has been the face of the Big Spring High School Lady Steers’ golf program. On Monday afternoon, she became the face of another.
Guinn became the latest Big Spring senior to sign to play collegiately next fall on Monday afternoon when she inked a deal to play golf next season at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. Guinn signed the scholarship in front of a large gathering of her family, friends and classmates in the BSHS foyer.

Pappajohn, Roberson shine in golf opener

Mikey Pappajohn and the Big Spring High Steers boys’ golf team battled their way to a fourth-place finish at the 2014 Big Spring Golf Tournament, which was held Saturday at the Big Spring Country Club.

Big Spring to begin playoff run against Fabens tonight

Big Spring will kick off its quest to notch a postseason victory this evening when they face off with the Fabens Lady Wildcats in the bi-district round of the high school girls’ basketball playoffs. The two teams are set to tip-off beginning at 6 p.m. in the Pecos High School gym.

Council considers parking ordinance

The Big Spring City Council is expected to “put some teeth” in an ordinance banning parked cars on front yards when it holds its regular bi-weekly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, located at 307 E. Fourth St.

George William 'Bill' Cottom

George William “Bill” Cottom, age 71, of Brady, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, in Abilene, Texas.

He was born Feb. 19, 1942 in Enid, Okla. to George William Cottom II and Norma Kay (Lovely) Cottom. He graduated high school in Enid, Okla. He had lived in Brady since 1988. He married Reta Mae Tubbs on Sept. 10, 1986 in Brady. He was a heavy equipment operator for more than 30 years, working many of those years for Weaver Construction of Snyder. He was a Methodist.

Thomas Vernon Swafford

Thomas Vernon Swafford, 91, of Midland, formerly of Big Spring, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, in a Midland nursing home. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Vernon was born April 10, 1922, in Marshall, Texas. He was a driller in the 1940s and drove a transport truck for the next 40 years. He also owned a small ranch in Paradise, Texas.

Melba L. Soles

Melba L. Soles, 92, of Hot Springs, Ark., formally of Big Spring, passed away in Hot Springs on Friday, Feb. 8, 2014. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel, with burial at Trinity Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
