Early voting going well at courthouse

More than 1,000 voters have cast early ballots in advance of the March 4 state and county primary election, officials said.

On Monday, 152 ballots were cast, bring early voting totals to 1,024. That figure represents 6.19 percent of the registered voters in Howard County, Election Administrator Saundra Bloom said.

Bobby Dancer

Bobby Dancer, 66, of Big Spring, died Thursday Feb. 20, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Ackerly Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 6, 1947, to Elnora and John Dancer in Crockett City, Texas. He spent most of his life in Big Spring. He was a Baptist and worked at Walmart.

He is survived by a sister, Annie B. Bell of Levelland; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Adam Dancer and Lacy Dancer; three sisters, Pearly Jean Jones, Eldora Dancer and Carrie D. Dancer.

Guadalupe Rodriguez Sr.

Guadalupe Rodriguez Sr., 68, of Big Spring died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial following at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

He was born to Juanita and Rafael Rodriguez Jan. 7, 1946 in Knott. He was a lifelong resident of Howard County. He was a Catholic.

Betty A. Earl

Betty A. Earl, 79, of Big Spring, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, in a local hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.

She was born Aug. 7, 1934, in Beckley, W.Va. She married Samuel Ronald Earl in Beckley, W.Va. and he preceded her in death Jan. 3, 1980.

She moved to Big Spring with her husband, who was stationed at Webb Air Force Base. Betty retired from J.C. Penney after 18 years in shoe sales.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

John W. Moody Jr.

John W. Moody Jr, 82, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, in a local nursing home. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory.

Loss to NMJC leaves Hawks in must-win mode in finale

The New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds held off a late rally by the Hawks to claim a crucial 63-62 win in front of a large crowd in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum on Monday. In so doing, the Thunderbirds clarified Howard College’s postseason hopes ... win on Thursday in Snyder or watch from the bleachers.

Lady Thunderbirds deal HC women a loss

The New Mexico Junior College Lady Thunderbirds moved a step closer to claiming the Western Junior College Athletic Conference women’s basketball championship on Monday night in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
And they Howard College Lady Hawks weren’t too thrilled about it.

Lady Steers go 2-2 at Stephenville tournament

The Big Spring High School Lady Steers’ softball team’s trip to Stephenville this past weekend went anything but the way they had hoped. Big Spring went 2-2 in the annual Honeybee Invitational, which was held Thursday through Saturday in the Stephenville City Park.

BSFD looks to institute fee system

Big Spring Fire Department officials are asking the Big Spring City Council’s help in recouping some of their costs for emergency calls.

The council will consider instituting a fee system for certain services rendered by the fire department when it meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers on East Third Street.

Candidate filing pace glacial for schools

Candidates jumping into area school board trustee races increased by zero last week.

Less than one week is left to file an intent to run for a public school or Howard College board seat. Filing ends Friday.

So far, only two races have garnered any competition.
