Montgomery gins 1st bale of 2014 crop

The first bale of cotton in the county was ceremonially unveiled Thursday morning at the Howard County Courthouse.

“The cotton industry plays a big part in our community and these farmers are not only involved in their farms but also in their church or community organizations,” said Debbye ValVerde, Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce executive director. “We as the Chamber try to acknowledge their contribution to the community not only with our annual ag appreciation luncheon but also the first cotton bale presentation.”

Maruja Jimenez, 86, of Big Spring, formerly of Amarillo, died Friday, Nov. 07, 2014, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2014 at 1st Church of The Nazarene with the Rev. Calvary Callender officiating. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel in Amarillo, Texas with Chaplain Scott Jimenez officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park.

Jesus Jaime Aguirre Sr., 57, was called to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014. A celebration of his life will take place at St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church in Abilene, Texas, on Nov. 14, 2014 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Terry Brenon officiating. He will then be buried alongside his mother and father in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Steers strip Brownwood in finale

Nathan Schneider didn’t think too much about the situation when Brownwood’s Harley Price ducked his head and pushed his way into a pile in an effort to get a few extra yards. He only knew one thing, with his team trailing with 9:25 left in the game the Steers desperately needed the ball.
Thus, when Price didn’t go down, Schneider decided to try and strip the ball from the running backs’ hands.

Suspect sought in Thursday shooting

Police are searching for a suspect in a Thursday afternoon shooting that wounded a Big Spring man.

Big Spring Police Department officers responded to the 1500 block of Sycamore in reference to a “shots fired” call shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday, a BSPD news release stated. On arrival, officers found one victim with a gunshot wound to the lower leg.

The victim was identified as Nathan D. Robinson III, 40.

Museum to honor Joe Pickle

When talking about the Big Spring Herald, one name always comes to the forefront — Joe Pickle.



For more than four decades, Pickle was a fixture at the Herald, retiring as the paper’s editor in 1975, but his legacy in the community goes far beyond his work in journalism.

The museum will dedicate a plaque in memory of Pickle at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Donna Banks-Reefschneider

Donna Banks-Reefschneider of Clyde formally of Coahoma, Texas, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Coahoma Church of Christ.

Donna was born Dec. 20, 1954, in Big Spring, Texas, to the parentage of Pete and Myrtle Banks. She received her primary education from Coahoma schools. She married Asa Reefschneider in February 1973. The family then moved to Roswell, N.M. for several years before moving to Odessa in 1984.
