Gregorio (George) Bustamante

July 8, 2014

Mr. Gregorio (George) Bustamante of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, passed away at the age of 89 on July 1, 2014. He was born on March 12, 1925, to Ejinio and Paz Bustamante of Barstow, Texas.

He married Margarita Vasquez, served in the U.S. Army and worked at Pyote AFB before moving to Big Spring, Texas, in 1954 and worked at Webb AFB in the motorpool until his retirement in 1976.

He was a Crusillista and sang with a mariachi group from Midland, Texas.

Mary Ellen (Werthe) Pope

Mary Ellen (Werthe) Pope, 88, of Big Spring, Texas passed away July 5, 2014. She was born in Tulsa, Okla. on Feb. 28, 1926, and moved to Big Spring from Mauldin, S.C., where she resided for nearly 40 years. She was a long-standing member of the Mauldin United Methodist Church.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Sam L. Pope, who passed away in December 1997, and her son-in-law, Todd Fulmer, who passed away in August 2012.

Chester Coffman, 94, of Big Spring, died Monday, July 7, 2014 at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Coahoma Freedom Parade 2014

The Freedom Parade and celebration was a colorful affair held in downtown Coahoma Saturday. Parade marshals were veterans Gary Cunningham, Manuel Holguin, Zac Lindsey and Alvin Luce. The late Quail Dobbs, world-famous rodeo clown, former justice of the peace and mainstay of the Coahoma Kindergarten Rodeo, was honored in the parade with three young men in costumes similar to what Dobbs often wore in the arena.

Duck races returning to Big Spring

The third annual Big Spring Duck Race will happen the evening of July 18 at the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Center.
The race will happen soon after the pool is closed to the public for the day.

Nadine Lillian (Haynes) Hodnett, 102, of Big Spring, died peacefully at Parkview Nursing Home Wednesday, July 2, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Frank Hodnett and the Rev. Joey Bacon officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Eva Carrasco Yanez

Eva Carrasco Yanez, 64, of Big Spring, died Friday July 4, 2014 in Odessa. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial following at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Eva was born to Elena and Ireneo Carrasco on Nov. 27, 1949 in Pecos, Texas. She was a lifetime resident of Big Spring and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She was a certified nurse’s aide.
