Symphony takes stage Saturday

A young finalist from the famed Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the return of a favorite guest conductor will highlight the next Big Spring Symphony performance.

John Giordano will return to Big Spring Saturday as guest conductor for the Big Spring Symphony, appearing with Fei Fei Dong, a finalist in the 2013 Van Cliburn Piano Competition, when the Symphony takes the stage at 8 p.m. in the Big Spring Auditorium. Doors open at 7 p.m.

‘Shape of Things’ will open Friday at Hall Center

“The Shape of Things,” a play by Neil LaBute, will make its debut Friday night at 8 at the Howard College Hall Center For The Arts. Tickets are still available.

The play is a combined effort of the Howard College theater and art departments. Paintings by local artist Andreia Medlin will be featured as part of the set in the play, whose subject is how far is too far when art is for art’s sake.

Yolanda "Landy" Ramirez Lara, 69, of Big Spring, formerly of Brownsville, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at her daughter's home in Brownsville. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Big Spring. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park in Big Spring.

She was born June 11, 1944, in Big Spring and married Benito Lara July 1, 1960, in Big Spring.

Jerry McCormick, 72, of Big Spring, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 in a local hospital. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Joey Bacon officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

He was born Aug. 22, 1941, in Big Spring to Jesse and Margery McCormick and married Carolyn Clary April 4, 1997, in Del Rio, Texas.

Funeral services for Joe Garcia Lopez Sr., 67, of Lovington, N.M. will be held Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church with the Rev. Manuel Ibarra officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.
