Coach Derrick Jackson looked out at the court at the SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf Activity Center following the Lady Rattlers’ season-opening loss to the No. 19-ranked Western Texas College Lady Wranglers and breathed a sigh of relief.
Tuesday’s 25-7, 25-4, 25-6 loss to Western Texas wasn’t a story-book beginning for his team, but it was a beginning nonetheless.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raised nearly $80 million over the last month. These viral videos have been sweeping Big 12 campuses, as administrators and coaches have been heavily involved in raising awareness and money.

David James Green, 47, of San Antonio, formerly of Big Spring, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, in a San Antonio nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring with the Rev. Ken McIntosh, pastor of First Christian Church, officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Clean sweep: Council removes EDC board of directors

Faced with what they described as a drastic situation at the local Economic Development Corporation, the Big Spring City Council devised an equally drastic solution.

In an emotionally charged council chamber Tuesday evening, the council voted by a 5-to-2 margin to remove the EDC board of directors — Don Avant, Nati Saldivar, Frances Hobbs, Jim DePauw and Scott MacKenzie.

Mayor Larry McLellan was joined by council members Raul Marquez Jr., Justin Myers, Bobby McDonald and Raul Benavides in voting to oust the board, while Carmen Harbour and Marvin Boyd voted against the action.

Council raises trash collection fees

An unfortunate fact Big Spring residents are only too aware of is that trash costs money — and it’s about to get even more expensive.

Spurred on by the need to pay for a new landfill, Big Spring City Council members approved new trash collection rates by a 6-to-1 vote during their Tuesday night meeting. Marvin Boyd was the only council member who voted against the measure.

Lady Steers fall to Frenship

The Big Spring High School Steers suffered a tough 3-0 setback to the Frenship Lady Tigers in Lubbock on Tuesday evening in non-district volleyball action.

City council fires EDC board

Citing a "dysfunctional" atmosphere at the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation, the local city council voted 5-2 Tuesday evening to remove the EDC's board of directors.

Mayor Larry McLellan was joined by council members Justin Myers, Raul Marquez Jr., Bobby McDonald and Raul Benavides in voting to oust the EDC board, while Carmen Harbour and Marvin Boyd voted against the action.

McLellan said city officials will accept applications for the EDC board over the next few weeks. He hopes to have a new board in place sometime in late September.

College art department receives Raku art supplies

Through a generous donation by Big Spring resident Woodie Fowler, the Howard College Art Department received various ceramics art supplies totaling about $350-$400 in molds, greenware and bisqueware. The items will be used for the Raku workshops scheduled for the fall and spring semesters.
