Despite concerns, Pops goes off without hitch

Call it the little fourth of July celebration that could, although Pops in the Park really can’t be described as little.

First, committee members for Big Spring’s Independence Day and fireworks display festivities struggled throughout the year to find financing for the $45,000 plus event. Struggled so much, the event almost didn’t happen until a last-minute donation by Superod came through.

Alan Davis Kernodle

The life of Alan Davis Kernodle will be celebrated with a graveside service Saturday July 5, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Memorial Park.

Alan left for his Heavenly home Wednesday July 2, 2014, in Big Spring, Texas. At 88, Alan had a thumbs up and a hearty “hello” for friends and family and no one was a stranger.

Patsy B. Dorton

July 4, 2014

Mrs. Patsy B. Dorton, age 77 of Scroggins, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at her home with her family at her side.

Patsy was born in Big Spring on Sept. 13, 1936, to the late Aubry Z. and Alice Cleo Madilin Gay. She was a retired R.N. with the VA Hospital in Big Spring, and a founding and devoted member of the Living Word church in Leesburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mr. Louis R. Dorton; and daughter, Mechelle Hecker.

Highland South Parade kids to strut their stuff

Hooray for the red, white and youth.

The Highland South July 4 Parade, which will feature an assortment of youngsters in their red, white and blue finest, returns Friday.

This year’s parade will be held along Highland Drive beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, July 4, organizers said. Participants will line up at the intersection of Highland and Robb streets at 9:30 a.m.

Pops in the Park schedule

July 3, 2014

Here is the schedule of events for the Pops in the Park celebration, which will be held tonight at the Comanche Trail Park amphitheater. Admission is free.

5 p.m. — gates open at amphitheater; food and novelty booths open.

6 p.m. — pre-show performance by AC and the Heaters.

7:45 p.m. — welcome and announcements by emcee Clay “Gooney” Vickers.

8 p.m. — flag ceremony and performance by Big Spring Symphony.

9:15 p.m. — video presentation recognizing U.S. military personnel.

9:35 p.m. — fireworks display.

Anne Hardy Chaney

July 3, 2014

Anne Hardy Chaney died June 30, 2014, after a short illness.

Anne was born Sept. 10, 1933, in Dallas, Texas. She graduated Highland Park High School and Austin College. After graduation she moved to Big Spring, Texas, and married James Robert Chaney. They had three sons, Robert, Roy and John. After her husband's retirement, they settled in Houston where she worked as a realtor. In 1990, with her husband and son Roy, they established Camaro Concepts Inc. where she worked every day.

Lou Hatfield

Lou Hatfield, 85 of Borger died July 2, 2014, in Borger. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday July 5, at Faith Covenant Church with Pastor Les Sharp officiating. Burial will be at Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 5, at the funeral home.

David Michael Armendarez

MCALLEN — David Michael Armendarez of McAllen, Texas, was called home by our Heavenly Father on June 26, 2014, while working in Rochelle, Ill. He was 28 years old.

David was born in Crane, Texas, on April 21, 1986.

He was a long-time resident of McCamey, Texas. David was a devoted husband and father. He was a faithful Catholic. His bible was never far from his reach. David's life revolved around family and friends. David was employed by Airways Services as a traveling wind technician.

Marion Morgan

July 3, 2014

Marion Morgan, 85, of Big Spring died Wednesday, July 2, 2014, in a local nursing home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with Rick Cunningham officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Marion was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Howard County and married La Nell Thompson Feb. 18, 1977, in Lovington, N.M.
