Robbery attempt goes awry Friday

March 3, 2014

A knife-wielding man is in custody following an apparent armed robbery Friday at the Big Spring Super Wal-Mart store.
Robert Andrews, 44, was taken into custody by Big Spring police officers outside of the Super Center around lunchtime.

Jerris Springfield

March 3, 2014

Jerris Springfield passed away Friday morning, Feb. 28, 2014, at his home. He was born May 9, 1936, in Robstown, Texas, to Henry and Mirl Springfield. Jerris and his sisters grew up on the family farm near Vincent, Texas, and he graduated from Coahoma High school in 1954. Jerris attended Texas Western University (now UTEP) on a football scholarship and played in the 1955 Sun Bowl.

Norma ‘Ruth’ Shepherd Wirsching

March 3, 2014

Norma “Ruth” Shepherd Wirsching was born near Colorado City, Texas, on Jan. 6, 1927. She left this world peacefully to join her Heavenly Father on Feb. 26, 2014, at the age of 87.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Joe E. Wirsching of Portland, Texas, and her sister, Pat (Bobby) Bradford of Vincent, Texas. Ruth was born seventh of nine children (eight girls/one boy).

BSPD officer arrested, placed on leave

March 1, 2014

A Big Spring Police Department officer has been placed on administrative leave following his arrest on theft charges.

Officer Simon Elizondo was arrested on a state jail felony charge of theft by a public servant Friday and booked into the Howard County Law Enforcement Center, BSPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Tony Everett said in a news release.

More than 2,000 cast early ballots

March 1, 2014

More than 2,000 Howard County voters cast early ballots for Tuesday’s primary elections, officials said.

By the end of early voting Friday, 2,015 people — 12.18 percent of the county’s registered voters — had cast ballots, County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom said. That figure included 319 mail-in ballots.

Loyd Howard Hammon

Loyd Howard Hammon, 88, of Big Spring passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home. He was born Oct. 8, 1925, in Sand Springs, Okla., to William and Edith Hammon. Even as a young man, he worked hard to help support his family. He was also anxious to show support for his country and joined the Marines at the age of 17. During World War II, he fought in the Pacific and was honorably discharged in August 1945. He then moved to Odessa, Texas, to work with his father.
