George M. Peters, 88 of Midland, formerly of Stanton, Texas, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, in a Midland nursing home. A rosary service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stanton. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stanton with Msgr. James Bridges, officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Stanton.

Few takers for school board races

Walk by any public school administration office and you can hear the crickets chirping — at least where it concerns candidates filing for trustee races.
Filing to run as a candidate in the Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan school board races has been light to say the least and the same for Howard College.

Guild fundraiser brings back the 20s

“Flappers were the original hippies,” said Karen Graves, who organized the Big Spring Symphony Guild “Music To My Heart” Valentine Brunch and Fashion Show held Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
According to Graves, costumer for the Midland Community Theater, free spirits of the 1920s pushed the boundaries of social convention. It was evident in the way they dressed.

Early voting starts Tuesday

Election season is here — almost.

Early voting for the March state and county primary elections will have to wait a day longer than usual, thanks to a holiday, but the polls will open Tuesday, said Howard County Election Administrator Saundra Bloom.

City, county offices closed for holiday Monday

February 15, 2014

The city of Big Spring will close all offices Monday, including the landfill and compost facility. Trash will not be collected Monday but emergency services (police, fire and EMS) will be staffed as normal. Emergency Utilities Department will also continue and can be contacted at 264-2392.

Howard County will also close all offices, including the courthouse and public library. The sheriff's office and county detention center will be staffed.

Richard Stone

February 15, 2014

Richard Stone, 82, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Parkview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. No services are planned.

He was born in Saugus, Mass. to Winifred and Thomas Stone. He served in the United States Air Force and retired from civil service after being stationed at San Angelo, San Antonio and Webb Air Force Bases. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Benton, Ark.

Steve Coleman, 60, of Big Spring, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at his residence. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Trinity Memorial Park with Charles Childers, officiating.

Big Spring powerlifters shine at Mustang Power Classic in Sweetwater

The Big Spring boys’ and girls’ powerlifting teams both turned in solid outings on Thursday at the annual Mustang Power Classic in Sweetwater. Both BSHS squads placed in the top 10 in their respective divisions.

Levelland ends Lady Steers’ playoff run

Levelland, backed by a 25-2 run to start the game, ended the Lady Steers’ 2013-14 season on Friday in front of a large crowd in the Post High School gymnasium by racing to a 51-21 victory in a Class 3A Area round playoff.
