5 spellers heading to regional bee

Five Big Spring primary students are heading to the Regional Spelling Bee after being crowned the best speller in their individual school.

“Big Spring ISD is very proud of our spelling champions,” said Robin Ritchey, Big Spring Independent School District spelling bee coordinator. “All their hard work and practice paid off this week. I want to thank all the students, parents and teachers who helped make this year's contest great.”

Jacinto Hilario Jr.

Jacinto Hilario Jr., 71, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at his residence. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

He was born May 25, 1942, in Big Spring to Pilar and Jacinto Hilario Sr. He married Dora Cervantes Nov. 25, 1972, in Big Spring. He was a lifelong resident of Howard County, was self-employed and was a Catholic.

Former Midland Mayor Mike Cannon was in Big Spring Thursday campaigning for the state senate District 31 race. He is competing against incumbent Kel Seliger of Amarillo in the Republican primary.

Donnie Wayne Hale, 64, of Westbrook, Texas, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Jan. 29, 2014.

Mary Dean Cuthbertson 88, of Houma, La., formerly of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, in a Houma nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.

Mary was born Dec. 21, 1925, in Texas and married Vernon Cuthbertson Nov. 17 1944, in Big Spring. He preceded her in death Nov. 26, 1998.

She worked in the canteen at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Big Spring. After the death of her husband and sons, she had moved to Houma to be closer to her daughter.

Ellyn Avery has some fond memories of growing up in the Forsan-Big Spring area. Unfortunately for the Howard College Lady Hawks, now she has another one.
Avery, the daughter of former Big Spring High School girls’ basketball coach Jim Avery, pumped in a game-high 18 points on Thursday and helped power the Midland College Lady Chaparrals to a 71-45 win in front of a large crowd in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
