Peggy Nell Knowles

Peggy Nell Knowles, 79 of Bennington, Okla,, went to be with the Lord on May 14, 2014. Peggy passed at home of natural causes with her husband Clay by her side. Peggy Nell (Roberds) Knowles was born on Aug. 10, 1934, in Algerita, Texas, to Edgar and Nell Roberds. She was married to Clay Knowles on Oct. 5, 1972, in Juarez, Mexico. She attended school in Richland Springs, Texas. Peggy was the first woman district manager for 7-Eleven in West Texas, then went on to drive a hot shot truck for DQ Wise.

Ronald Edwin 'Andy' Anderson

Ronald Edwin “Andy“ Anderson, 77 of Tacoma, Wash., formerly of Big Spring, Texas, passed away Thursday May 8, 2014 in Tacoma, Wash. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services with full military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at Trinity Memorial Park Peace Chapel.

VA clinics to get federal audit

Recent concerns over the use of alleged “secret waiting lists” have prompted Secretary Eric Shinseki of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to send out audit teams to clinics in the VA Medical Center, and that includes the West Texas VA Heealth Care System in Big Spring.

With warmer weather, TxDOT touts cycle safety

State officials want to make roads safer for motorcycle riders.

In an effort to reverse a 5-percent year-over-year increase in motorcycle crash fatalities, the Texas Department of Transportation is launching its month-long “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” campaign. The campaign, which started Thursday, coincides with the first day of national Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

Shirley Jean Rhea, 68, of Odessa, died Sunday, May 11, 2014, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel in Big Spring. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.

She was born Oct. 20, 1945, in Wichita Falls, Texas and married Morris Rhea July 13, 1991, in Odessa. He preceded her in death Feb. 26, 2007.

She was a hairdresser and loved raising children. She was a longtime owner of Cassidy's Hideaway,.

Phyllis Evans

Phyllis Evans, 88, of Stanton, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014, in Greenwood, Texas. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, at the Evergreen Cemetery Chapel in Stanton.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gilbreath Funeral Home.

She was born April 17, 1926, to Arthur William Howard and Margaret Mabel Goffin Howard in The Grange, Langley, England. Phyllis moved to Stanton in the early 1940s after marrying R. A. Evans of Stanton, who preceded her in death.

As developers wait, city ponders water, sewer lines, zoning for northern sector

The northern sector, the northwest corridor — whatever you want to call it, it is a place of great interest to both developers and Big Spring city officials.

The sector, which covers a roughly fan-shaped area spreading west and south from Highway 87 to Interstate 20, was a central topic of discussion during Tuesday’s meeting of the Big Spring City Council.

City keeping eyes out for water thieves

Theft of water service is becoming a cause of concern in Big Spring, and city officials are taking steps to put a halt to the practice.

During their Tuesday meeting, city council members passed the first reading of a new ordinance authorizing a wide range of fines for anyone who tampers with their water service within the city limits.

Lupe Aleman 'Chita' Fierro

Lupe Aleman "Chita" Fierro, 91, of Barstow, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, died Monday, May 12, 2014, in a Pecos nursing home. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

She was born April 6, 1923, in Big Spring and married Frank Fierro Sr. He preceded her in death April 27, 1970. She loved to garden and cook.
