Election on city council agenda

January 26, 2015

Big Spring’s City Council is expected to approve establishing May 9 as the date for this year’s municipal elections when it meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, located at 307 E. Fourth St.

Three council seats will be up for election this year — District 2, currently held by Carmen Harbour, District 4, held by Bobby McDonald and District 6, in which Marvin Boyd is the incumbent. None of the three have indicated whether they will seek re-election.

Police probe Friday shooting

Big Spring police are investigating a Friday night shooting that left a local teenager in serious condition.

Police responded to 1606 Kentucky at about 11:40 p.m. Friday in reference to a shooting, a BSPD news release stated.

The initial report from the victim, prior to her transfer to Lubbock, indicated that she accidentally shot herself while handling a handgun.

Commissioners to hear plan to rename stretch of I-20

Howard County commissioners will hear from an area law enforcement official who wants to rename a stretch of Interstate 20 after two fallen state troopers when they meet at 10 a.m. Monday in the county courthouse’s third floor courtroom.

Charles Hall, a constable from Midland, is garnering support to rename a portion of I-20 east of Salem Road after former Department of Public Safety Troopers Troy Hogue and Jimmy Parks, Big Spring residents who were killed in the line of duty.

Chamber banquet Tuesday

The suspense is gathering as the recipients of the Big Spring Man and Woman of the Year will be revealed Tuesday night at the annual Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce banquet.

“We are so excited to announce the names of the Man and Woman of the Year recipients,” said Debbye ValVerde, Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce executive director. “Our nomination committee thoughtfully and carefully weighed the acts of work each of the nominees have given throughout the years. All the nominees deserve recognition for the countless hours and contributions they have given to our community."

Friday’s showdown with the Sweetwater Lady Mustangs might not have been a work of art, but the Big Spring High School Lady Steers aren’t complaining.
Big Spring scored points from the free throw line and rolled to a 45-28 victory in a crucial District 2-4A showdown in the Steer Gym.

Steers wear down Sweetwater

Sometimes ugly can be downright beautiful. Just ask the Big Spring High School Steers, if you need proof.
Big Spring, despite struggling with its perimeter shooting game, used the water erosion approach to perfection against Sweetwater on Friday night in front of a large crowd in the Steer Gym. They simple wore them down with a dominating effort inside from Tyler Bryan and Ty Sealy.
The two BSHS seniors, with plenty of help from seniors Tobyn Tannehill, Matt Yanez and Dee Parker, posted a 34-25 run in the final two quarters of play en route to claiming a tough 51-43 come-from-behind win.

College dedicates SimDental Center

Howard College officials will have a formal ribbon cutting to dedicate the new F. Marie Hall SimDental Center on Monday at 10:30am.

The ceremony will be held at the SimDental Center on the first floor of the Horace Garrett Center on the campus of Howard College.

“We are so excited about the simulation center and what this will mean for the future of our dental hygiene program,” said Dr. Cheryl T. Sparks, President of Howard College. “And we are so grateful to Marie Hall for her vision and development of the center.”

Property tax deadline Feb. 2

If you’ve been putting off paying your property tax bills until the last minute, fair warning — the last minute is almost here.

Homeowners have until Feb. 2 (Jan. 31, the traditional deadline, falls on a Saturday) to pay their tax bills without penalties or interest, said Diane Carter, Howard County tax assessor/collector.
