Homecoming Court named for Big Spring High School

October 1, 2014

A community bonfire is set to fire up Steer spirit as part of several activities planned for the 2014 Big Spring High School homecoming festivities.

The bonfire will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday by the old Anderson Kindergarten building located on Airbase Road near the Howard County Fair Barns. Predicted high for that day will be in the low 80s and lows in the low 50s.

Lynn C. Hise

Lynn C. Hise, 85, of Fort Worth, formerly of Big Spring, passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, in Fort Worth. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring with the Rev. Mark Lindsey, officiating.

Lynn was born Dec. 4, 1928, in Falfurrias, Texas, and married Mary Nell Gates June 1, 1951.

Junior Hinojosa

October 1, 2014

Junior Hinojosa, 58, of Coahoma died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at his residence. Private family services will be at a later date.

He was born Jan. 9, 1956 in Roma, Texas to Eufemia and Enemencio Hinojosa Sr. He spent most of his life in Coahoma. He worked for the City of Coahoma. He had also worked as a truck driver for Price Construction and Cowboy Construction.

He is survived by one son, Austin Hinojosa and wife April of Coahoma; one daughter, Sierra Hinojosa of Big Spring; two grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Hinojosa of Coahoma; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Symphony season to begin Oct. 9

Let there be music.

The Big Spring Symphony kicks off its new season with a musical event in the ballroom of the Settles Hotel Oct. 9.

The event, called “Come to the Masquerade,” begins with a reception at 6 p.m. Following dinner, the Big Spring Junior High School Choir, directed by Tara Trowbridge, will perform along with the Howard College Jazz Band directed by Dan Kiley.

Verna Mae Ashford

Verna Mae Ashford of Big Spring, Texas went home to be with the Lord Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center at the age of 81 years old. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial following at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Helen Hollis Croft

Helen Hollis Croft, postmaster retired, passed away Sept. 25, 2014, at the age of 85. Born Sept. 9, 1929, in Duffau, Texas, Helen spent much of her childhood growing up in the Hico area with her family. Helen and her mother moved to Grand Prairie during her high school years and she graduated from Grand Prairie High School. Helen met John Croft while both were attending Tarleton College and were married on Sept. 4, 1948. John and Helen were longtime residents of the Proctor Community in Comanche County.

Maria Trinidad Lira Lopez, 78, of Garden City, Texas went home to be with Our Lord Jesus Christ Sept. 27, 2014 surrounded by her family.

Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery.
