D.A. Thurman, 95, of Colorado City, formerly of Big Spring, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, in a Colorado City nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel in Big Spring with Dr. Jerry Sheilds officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.

He was born Nov. 30, 1918, in Sulphur Springs, Texas and married Ella Mae Carpenter Sept. 26, 1939, in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

Possibility of rain looms over ‘Pops’

About the only thing that can rain on the annual Pops in the Park celebrations is, well, rain.

Event officials have cleared a lot of hurdles in recent weeks — including a cash shortfall — to get ready for Thursday’s event. Now, the only potential roadblock is Mother Nature.

The National Weather Service forecast for Thursday calls for hot temperatures, which is no surprise for a West Texas summer. However, it also calls for a 30 percent chance for isolated thunderstorms.

Gayle DoraLyn Hart, 54, of Hannibal, Mo., passed away at 5:15 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2014, at her home.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hannibal, Mo. Mr. Bob Hintz will officiate.

The James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hart was born Nov. 18, 1959, in Hannibal, Mo. to Christopher William Foster Sr. and Jacqueline L. Howes Foster.

She was married to David Hart. He preceded her in death.

CASA still in need of volunteers

CASA of West Texas is still in need of volunteers to help serve the 173 children currently involved in the courts system in the area.

Last year, more than 46,600 Texas children were in the child welfare system, waiting to be placed in permanent homes. Victims of abuse and neglect, these children were removed from their homes through no fault of their own and placed in the child welfare system.

Blood drive/picnic set for Wednesday

In hopes to continue to address the need for blood donations, Back in Motion will be the site of the next blood drive for the United Blood Services and at the same time the local business will be hosting a patient picnic.

The drive is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Back in Motion, 1113 S. Scurry St, and is in combination with an annual patient appreciation picnic.

Ruby "Cuca" Juarez, 71, of Big Spring, died Friday, June 27, 2014, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park, Big Spring.

Pallbearers are Thomas Rios, Matthew Mier, Jordan Sosa, Pete Sosa, Joe Ethan Chavez, Scooter Anderson, Patrick Rios and Robert Obando. Honorary Pallbearers are David Anderson, Arthur "Tweety" Juarez Jr., Lupe Gutierrez, Cruz Gutierrez and Rudy Ortega Jr.

Mr. David Smith, age 32, of Big Spring, went to be with the Lord Friday, June 27, 2014, in a Lubbock hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, in the Kiker-Seale Chapel with the Reverends Claudine Chaney and Larry Chaney officiating. Burial will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Mr. Emilio H. Garza Sr. of Coahoma, formerly of Lenorah, were 10 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stanton, with Monsignor Schwertner officiating. Burial will follow at Coahoma Cemetery. A vigil was held Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Stanton Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.

He was born May 21, 1925, in Dilley, Texas and passed away June 27, 2014, in Midland, Texas.

He was a farmer for many years in Lenorah and Coahoma.

He is preceded in death by a daughter, Christina Garza; and a son, Luis Luz Garza.

Mrs. Drucilla Board, age 92, of Westbrook, died Friday, June 27, 2014, in a Big Spring care center. Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, in the Kiker-Seale Chapel with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Westbrook Cemetery under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
