HC dance auditions

June 1, 2015

The Howard College dance department will hold troupe auditions this Saturday.
The auditions will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continued until 12:30 p.m. in the Howard College Hall Center for the Arts Room 140, located at 1001 Birdwell Lane.
For the auditions, wear dance clothes, dance shoes with hair pulled back and stage makeup for the ladies. Ladies may wear leotard or jazz pants with dance shoes and men should wear a t-shirt/sweatpants or basketball like shorts with dance shoes or socks.

Rodriguez named top teacher

Described by her colleague as dynamic and a teacher who inspires her students, Kerri Rodriguez, a Big Spring Intermediate reading instructor, was honored with the local Masonic Lodge’s Mirabeau B. Lamar Award for Excellence — Outstanding Teacher of the Year for Big Spring ISD Thursday afternoon.

Morelion wins state Lincoln-Douglas debate title

On the first day of school, Big Spring High School Junior Ethan Morelion stated that he had one goal for the school year “Win a gold medal at the UIL Academic State Meet.”

On Wednesday, that goal was realized as Morelion defeated Lauren Alexander from Emory Rains High School to be crowned the 4A Lincoln-Douglas Debate State Champion.

Local man charged with murder in Ramos shooting

Big Spring Police have made an arrest in the shooting death of Freddie Ramos.

Joe Cruz Gutierrez, 28, of 1010 NW 2nd St., was arrested by Big Spring Police criminal investigators at 9:36 p.m. Thursday on a charge of murder for the death of Freddie Ramos.

Rain doesn’t dampen joy for accident victim, fellow Coahoma HS graduates

After months of recuperating from a broken neck caused by a sledding accident in February, a power outage at the Coahoma High School commencement was not much of an obstacle to overcome for graduating senior Garett Parrish.

Parrish was all smiles as he was pushed across stage to receive his high school diploma Thursday night at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum. A power outage several minutes earlier cut off the lights briefly and shut down the sound system for about five minutes before ceremonies continued.

City of Big Spring/KBST Splash-In Saturday

Summer is about to be herald in Saturday with a big splash.

The annual city of Big Spring Splash In is expected to draw thousands to the official opening of the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Center Saturday taking advantage of a free dip in the pool.

According to Hayley Lewis, tourism coordinator, the first 600 people will be admitted at 1 p.m. and have until 3 p.m. to enjoy the water park before exiting for the next group of 600. That group will be allowed into the park at 3:30 p.m. and will have two hours for swimming before the pool closes at 5:30 p.m.

Forsan HS commencement Saturday

Forsan High School has announced its top students for the 2015 graduating class. Zachary Long has been named valedictorian while Hannah Thompson is the salutatorian.

Long is the son of Kelly and Angie Long. During his time in high school, he has been an active member of the Forsan High School band and is the band president and trumpet section leader. His other extra curricular activities include One Act Play, Student Council where he serves as treasurer, tennis team and UIL academics.

Police investigate fatal shooting

May 28, 2015

A 30-year-old man was shot to death late Wednesday night outside a Big Spring restaurant.

According to a Big Spring Police news release, police officers found Freddie Ramos dead after responding to several reports of shots fired around 9:59 p.m. outside the Spanish Inn restaurant located in the 300 block of N. Scurry St.

“Several witnesses said they all observed the suspects enter a silver in color passenger car and speed away following the shooting,” said Police Sgt. Tony Everett in the news release.

Coahoma HS commencement tonight

Kelli Schaedel and Rylie Jacobs are the top students for the 2015 Coahoma High School graduating class.

Schaedel, the daughter of Kenneth and Karen Schaedel, is the class valedictorian. She has been the highest ranking student in her class all four years in high school. She is senior class vice president, a three year member of the National Honor Society and a student council officer for three years.

BSHS to graduate class of 2015

Tyler Bryan and Stevi Ward are the 2015 Big Spring High School graduation class valedictorian and salutatorian respectively.

Bryan is the son of Larry and Susan Bryan. Bryan has been a member of the National Honor Society where he served as president this year, competed in UIL academics was was the 2015 district champion in both science and math. He is an active band member serving on the drum line for four years and has been a member of two state qualifying ensemble groups.
