Olga Chavarria, 62, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at her residence. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

She was born July 1, 1951, in Big Spring, Texas to Sara (Brito) and Lalo Chavarria. She was a lifetime resident of Big Spring. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed listening to music, especially the “oldies.” She loved to make Easter baskets for her grandchildren.

‘Pops’ in danger of fizzling out?

Here’s the reality.

If Pops in the Park doesn’t come up with $20,000 soon, the show won’t go on this year.

“There may not be a Pops in the Park if we don’t get some donations in the next two to three weeks,” Kelly Seales, Pops chairman, said.

Local man arrested in robbery

Big Spring police have made an arrest in the Big A Shaved Ice robbery.

Heriberto Medina-Torres, 21, of Big Spring, was charged with aggravated robbery, a first degree felony, for his alleged role in the incident.

Roberto Galindo Garcia, 83, of Big Spring died Monday June 9, 2014, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Deacon Johnny Arguello officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park with Military Honors.

Joy Beth McCue, 75, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away on Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Estrelle Center in Avondale, Ariz. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Trinity Memorial Park Peace Chapel with Dr. Doug Shelley, pastor of East Side Baptist Church, officiating.

Joy was born on Aug. 9, 1938 in Hatch, N.M., to the late Clyde and Oma Hull.

Survivors include her sister, Cyldena Dorothy Garrett, Texas; her son Karl Marc McCue of Arizona, and her daughter Tricia Ann Ackerman of Arizona.

VA: Staffing shortage forces long wait times

West Texas VA Healthcare System officials believe the major reason for long wait times at its facilities is a serious staffing shortage and promise to take aggressive steps to remedy the situation.

Michael Kiefer, WTVAHS director, addressed the media in the wake of a report showing the system, headquartered in Big Spring, fared poorly in an audit which studied a variety of factors, including how long new and established patients had to wait for appointments.

Legends and Legacies is Friday

Heritage Museum officials hope you — and they — have a lucky Friday the 13th.

The financially troubled museum will hold its annual Legends and Legacies Casino Night this Friday, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the museum.

Tickets are $50 per person and include a meal, drinks and $2,000 in “fun money” for use at one of the casino games offered.

Glenn Pleas “Fuzzy” Dickenson Jr., 88, of Big Spring passed away peacefully, Friday, June 6, 2014, in Big Spring. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Pastor Ed Prince officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers include Bill & R. L. Lasater, Weldon Carmichael, Harvey Hanson and Jim Airheart.

Edna M. James, 82, of Big Spring, died Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Memorial services will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Pastor Mark Lindsey of First Baptist Church of Big Spring officiating.

She was born May 4, 1932, in Comanche County to Minnie Myrtle and Forest General Gilchrest. She married Jesse James on March 15, 1953, in DeLeon, Texas. She was a Baptist. She worked at Coker’s Restaurant for 15 years and then worked in the cafeteria for the Big Spring Independent School District for 12 years.
