Dixie Laverne Boyd

Dixie Laverne Boyd, 75 of Sweetwater, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at her residence.
She was born Sept. 17, 1938.
Survivors include her husband, Calvin Boyd of Sweetwater; daughters Vickie Hiltz and husband Dennis of Gilmer and Lisa Shelton and husband Don of Midland; son, Calvin Doyle Boyd of Sweetwater; sister, Joyce Whittenburg and husband Wendell of Sweetwater; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services are pending with McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.

Christene James

Christene James, 79, of Big Spring, died Thursday Sept. 11, 2014, at Parkview Nursing Center and Rehab. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date.
Christene was born Dec. 5, 1934 in Canton, Texas, to Verna and Joe Hollis. She came to Big Spring in 1970 from Mississippi. She married Luther Conn James in 1962 who preceded her in death in 2004. She worked for RIP Griffin Truck Stop for 11 years and nine years at West-Go. She later worked as a caregiver in Home Health Care for 11 years.

Sue Balzer, 79, of Big Spring, Texas, died Sunday Sept. 14, 2014, at Covenant Specialty Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Midway Baptist Church with Jim Binnix and Rick Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Alvin Lloyd Moore

Alvin Lloyd Moore, 80, earned his heavenly wings Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, in Paris, Texas. He was born Sept. 7, 1934, to Arville Lloyd Moore and Ruby Anna Pugh in Big Cedar, Okla. Alvin married Marilyn Joan Constant April 10, 1955, in Clovis, N.M.

Energy boost sparks Howard College to offer safety courses

To meet the needs of the growing energy industry, Howard College now offers safety training courses for area workers and businesses.
“We have open enrollment and Chad (Averette, director or work force training) will also work with business to create specialized classes that might need a H2S (hydrogen sulfide gas) awareness class or lock out/tag out (electrical/mechanical safety use in the oil field) for their employees, said Kinsey Hanesn.
