Juvenile injured in hit-and-run

June 11, 2015

Big Spring police are looking for a motoris believed responsible for the second hit-and-run incident in the city within the past week.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday, Big Spring Police Department officers were dispatched to the intersection of 13th and Young streets in reference to a vehicle/pedestrian accident, a BSPD news release stated.

Water tower leak repaired

Service has been restored to areas impacted a by leak in the water tower that services the north side of town, according to the city of Big Spring.

On Wednesday, the city issued a press release requesting citizens north of 11th place to limit use of water while crews worked to repair the leak.

HC daycare center closed because of water problems

June 10, 2015

The Howard Cottage Child Development Center will be closing immediately in response to issues with the low water pressure in the City of Big Spring.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Minimum Standards for Child-Care Centers requires toilets be in working order (flushing) at all times during operating hours and when children are present.

"Due to the low water pressure, we are not able to assure that all toilets will remain in working order," college officials stated in a news release.

Water service north of 11th Place hindered

The City of Big Spring has discovered a water leak in the water tower that services the North side of town.

"We ask all citizens within the affected area, north of 11th Place, to limit the use of water. Utility crews are working diligently to resolve the problem," officials said in a news release. "We regret any inconvenience and request your patience while we work towards repair.

Howard College discontinuing some courses

Strike a line through the drafting program at Howard College. It is no more.

On Monday, the board of trustees approved college officials recommendation to eliminate several certificates and a one degree program citing waning student enrollment and interest.

Summers on the Green series continues

The next Summers on the Green presentation will give a glimpse of what 1980s Hollywood thought life would be like in 2015 by way of the fictional movie “Back to the Future 2.”

The outdoor screening is set to begin at 7 p.m. Saturday on the Hotel Settles lawn and is the second of a three-part series by the hotel and the Big Spring Convention and Visitors Bureau to celebrate the historic Bankhead Highway. Also helping with the presentation is the Big Spring Film Society.

Grief counseling offered in wake of student's death

Big Spring ISD is offering counseling services to any students who have been impacted by the tragic death of a 16-year-old boy killed in an automobile accident Sunday night.

Pops in the Park chorus, donations needed

Singing voices and donations are being sought for the community Pops in the Park patriotic celebration.

“We are still looking for members to participate in the Pops in the Park Chorus,” said Ethan Wills, a member of the Big Spring Symphony Board. “If interested, they can come to the weekly rehearsal at the First United Methodist Church in Big Spring. Rehearsals will take place in the choir room.”

Chorus members are already preparing for the community-wide Independence Day celebration set for Friday, July 3.

Big Spring teen dies in accident

June 8, 2015

A 16-year-old Big Spring High School student was killed Sunday night on North Highway 87 after the vehicle he was traveling in collided with an 18-wheeler, according to multiple reports.

Dylan Lance died at Scenic Mountain Medical Center Sunday evening from injuries sustained in the accident, according to family members.

Hit and run claims life of local man

A Big Spring man was killed in an apparent hit and run incident early Sunday morning.

Big Spring police and emergency medical service personnel responded to a vehicle-pedestrian accident in the 1300 block of West Fourth Street shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday.

A Big Spring Police Department news release stated Tiodoro Diaz, 47, died from injuries sustained in the accident.
