State monitor assigned to BSISD

Trustees with the Big Spring Independent School District were introduced to Fred Liner of the Texas Education Agency placed in the district as a monitor during their monthly meeting.

The district has been under the watchful eyes of TEA because of low test scores the past several years.

Two arrested in drug sting

April 12, 2014

An anonymous tip helped local police arrest two people on drug charges Friday morning.

Scotty Ray Bland, 35, and Melinda Gamboa, 37, were arrested on a second degree felony charge of delivery of a controlled substance Friday morning at Motel 6.

Sandra Lou Graham

Sandra Lou Graham, age 64 of Colordo City, Texas, passed away Tuesday April 8, 2014, at Mitchell County Hospital. She was born April 28, 1949, in Snyder, Texas. Her parents were Sidney Randall Bell and Mary Louise Pierce Bell. She was married to Carl Eldon Graham on Dec.31, 1999. Mrs. Graham was a retired nurse.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jamie Stinchcomb; a sister, Vickie Jo Gorrondona; and a brother, Sidney Bell.

Organizers say it is an informative and fun way for people to find ways to live healthier lives; and it gives area health care providers a chance to showcase their services.

Tired of tired tires? Get a little help Saturday at landfill

You’ve heard of “Trash Free,” “Drug Free” and “Cell Free Zone.” How about helping make Big Spring “Tire Free?”

That’s exactly what Keep Big Spring Beautiful and the city are doing Saturday at the landfill.
County residents are invited to drop off old tires — up to eight at a time — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. free of charge. No commercial tire dealers will be accepted.

Viola Faye Smith

Viola Faye Smith, 89, of Coahoma passed away April 6, 2014. She was born Jan. 12, 1925, in Coahoma, Texas, to John and Myrtle Kerr.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at Laurel Land Funeral Home, 6000 S R L Thornton Fwy, Dallas, Texas, with graveside services at Laurel Land Cemetery Field of Honors.

She married Colley Smith on April 4, 1954. She was married 55 years and was a longtime resident of Big Spring, Texas. Colley and Viola then resided at Log Cabin City, Texas, after Colley retired from the city of Dallas, Texas.
