Chili cook-off set for Jan. 31

Chili cooks are needed for the 13th Annual Fraternal Order of Eagles Chili Cook-off Jan. 31 at the Eagles Lodge benefiting the West Texas Center’s Children in Need Fund.

The fund was established in 2001 and assists with the financial needs of children receiving mental health services from West Texas Centers.

Woman apprehended after high-speed chase

A Virginia woman led law enforcement on a 10-minute vehicle chase Wednesday night in an attempt to stop her heading the wrong way on Interstate 20.

According to Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker, the woman — whose name is not being released — was finally pulled over by law enforcement after traveling west in the Interstate 20 east bound lanes. Reports came in about 5:30 p.m. of a driver heading at a high rate of speed the wrong way with witnesses estimating the driver speeding at excess of 100 miles per hour.

United Way reports uptick from last year

The allocation committee for the United Way of Big Spring and Howard County headed into session Monday night with a little more funding to distribute to the area agencies than last year, according to United Way officials.

“We ended the campaign with about $305,0000 which is a little more than last year,” said Sandy Stewart, executive director for the local United Way campaign. “Of course, we would have loved to have made our goal of $330,000, but we are humbled by the donations."

BSPD accepting applications for citizens' academy

The Big Spring Police Department is accepting applications for the Citizens Police Academy Class to begin in May 2015.

“The CPA is 30 hour program intended to enhance understanding and cooperation between the citizens of Big Spring and Howard County and the personnel of the Big Spring Police Department,” said Brian Gordon, administrative lieutenant of the BSPD.

Ambulance fees on council agenda

The Big Spring City Council will consider an increase in ambulance fees when it meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, 307 E. Fourth St.

Big Spring Fire Chief Craig Ferguson says the proposed rate increases represent the first such hike for local ambulance service in the past several years.

Howard County Jr. Livestock Show debuts Wednesday

They’re ba-aa-aa-ck.

The 2015 Howard County Jr. Livestock Show is set to take over the G.C. Broughton Pavilion beginning Wednesday with more than 100 exhibitors showing off more than 250 entries this year.

“The Junior Livestock Show Association is dedicated to supporting the youth of Howard County,” said Nancy Raney, public relations officer for the 2015 show.
