Forsan ISD eyes field house renovations

FORSAN — School trustees here hope to hire a contractor to oversee renovation of the high school field house when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room.

Forsan Independent School District officials included $1 million in this year's budget to pay for the renovation, which is expected to begin sometime next spring.

County to consider computer software upgrades

Software will be on the minds of Howard County commissioners Monday morning, as the court meets to discuss a number items, including a possible upgrade to the programs used by county departments at the courthouse.

Commissioners are expected to discuss — and possibly take action — regarding a proposed upgrade to the computer systems utilized by a number of different county offices. According to county officials, the upgrade would help bring the systems more up-to-date, as well as allow different departments to better share information and data.

Juana Louise Osborn, 92, of Big Spring went home to be with her Lord, Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. Her services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at the Nalley, Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Ken McMeans, pastor of College Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at the funeral home.

She was born Dec. 25, 1919 in Hamby, Texas. She married D.M. (Dock) Osborn Na. 17, 1938 in Albany, Texas. He preceded her in death on November 8, 1982.

Stephen 'Steve' Johnson

Stephen “Steve” Johnson, 51, of Big Spring died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Dr. Doug Shelley, pastor of Eastside Baptist Church, officiating.

He was born Dec. 4, 1961, in France to Muriel and Charles Johnson. He worked most of his life in the oilfield. He also worked for B&E Roustabout and Robert Wash. He lived most of his life in Howard County and was a Baptist.

Head Men's Basketball Coach Mark Adams said a wide margin of victory over Division III Brookhaven College on Friday was likely, but the final score of 110-53 exceeded even his expectations.

“We have a team — as far as scoring goes — we score easily,” Adams, who has a NJCAA national championship title on his resume, said. “We can make plays and score points. It was a good win for us.”

The Bears never had a chance, as the Hawks quickly went up 9-0 before Brookhaven managed to put two points on the board.

Allison Tamara Waddell, 28, passed away Nov. 29, 2012, in her sleep at her home in Big Spring.

Jose Chavez

Jose Chavez, 30, of Garden City, Texas, was killed in an automobile accident Nov. 29, 2012.

He was born Feb. 24, 1982 in Rio Verde, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to Jose Jesus Chavez and the late Maria Del Rosario Torres de Chavez.

He began working at Eco-Drip Irrigation as a warehouse helper eventually became warehouse manager. He enjoyed hunting, dancing and barbecuing.

PD building closing its doors

Today marks a first for the Crossroads area, as the Big Spring Police Department made its final move into the Troy M. Hogue Joint Law Enforcement Center, placing all local law enforcement agencies under the same roof.

The BSPD — which joins the Howard County Sheriff's Office at the newly constructed facility — announced this week the move marks the closure of the previous police department building, located in downtown Big Spring.

Burrow: Gift drive a success

Hundreds of U.S. military personnel stationed overseas this Christmas season will receive some holiday cheer from area residents, thanks to a “great” response to the just-concluded Howard County's Christmas for Our Troops drive, organizers said.

Debbie Burrow, who led the drive, said almost 500 packages filled with holiday goodies, Christmas cards, toiletries and other items were mailed out this week.

Those items, plus the money to buy even more package-stuffers, were supplied by very generous Howard County residents, Burrow said.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• DARRYL LEE MILLER, 37, of 710 Pine, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for theft of service – more than $500 and less than $1,500.
• LAPAUL ERIC SCAGGS, 36, of 510 S. Benton, was arrested Thursday on a charge of disorderly conduct – language.
• THEFT was reported:
In the area of Kay Road.
In the 3300 block of E. FM 700.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 800 block of W. Eighth Street.
• BURGLARY OF A HABITATION was reported in the 1300 block of Lexington.
