Crossroads area volunteers — led by Keep Big Spring Beautiful — will kick off the season with some spring cleaning Saturday, April 2, as the local organization teams up with the state of Texas for the annual Don't Mess With Texas Trash-off.
“Keep Texas Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, which has each State scheduled for a clean up from March 1 through May 31,” said longtime Trash-off coordinator Pat Simmons. “So, Texas always works on the first Saturday in April unless Easter falls on that week-end.
Spring cleaning, anyone?
The city of Big Spring's annual large item pickup service will get under way Friday, and according to Code Enforcement Supervisor Chad Averette, the program will be available to more city residents than ever before.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• STEVEN DOUGLAS ELDER, 19, of 1809 Nolan, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for failure to use a safety seat – child less than 17 years of age, speeding and failure to yield the right-of-way.
• KYLE SHALOR SEBER, 22, of 1807 Driver Rd., was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.
• DANIEL PAUL JOHNSON, 48, of 811 W. Fifth St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
Estainslo S. “Tony” Dominguez, 63, of Big Spring died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Marilyn Moore, 73, of Octavia, Okla., formerly of Big Spring died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, in a Dallas hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2011, at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Walter McCall officiating.
Frances LaJuana Dennis, 82, of Stanton died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at her residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Evergreen Cemetery with Charles Dixon officiating.
William A. "Am" Fitzgerald, 93, of Big Spring died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, in an Odessa Hospice facility. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Floyd Morehouse, 82, of Big Spring died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, in a local hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Zach Hernandez will represent Big Spring High School at this weekend's Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet.
Hernandez, a senior at BSHS, will compete in the 123-pound category of Division 2 at the meet, which will be held at the Taylor County Expo Center.
He qualified for the state meet by placing second in his weight class at the recent THSPA regional meet in Sundown. His combined lift (adding totals from the bench press, squat and deadlift) was 875 pounds.
