UW announces $300,000 campaign goal

Let the campaign begin … well, almost.

United Way of Big Spring and Howard County hosted its annual campaign kickoff, Boots and Bling, Saturday night. During the event, the organization's new campaign goal — $300,000 — was announced through the words of Dr. Seuss.

“So let's get on our way of kicking of our campaign of $300,000,” Ann McClarty, United Way first vice president, said. “Will we succeed? Yes, we will succeed, 100 percent guaranteed.”

Money raised in the 2013 campaign will help support 16 local agencies:

SA school supply drive ends Friday

The local Salvation Army is currently taking applications for its annual back-to-school supply drive, as the charity hopes to send are children back to class with all the materials necessary for a successful school year.

According to Bessie Flores, social worker for the charity group, the Salvation Army will accept applications for assistance through the program through Friday, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Salvation Army office located at 811 W. Fifth St.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JAMIE JONES CHAPPELL, 35, of 1200 Madison, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• SHAWN WILLIAM TOW, 27, of Oklahoma, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• FREDERICK HERNANDEZ, 42, of 1405 S. Runnels, was arrested Sunday on warrants for driving while license invalid (two counts).
• CLIFTON LEWIS SCOTT, 35, of 538 Westover Rd. Apt. 206, was arrested Sunday on charges of assault – family violence and interfering with an emergency phone call.

Jurors sought for assault trial

August 18, 2012

Jury selection in the trial of a 27-year-old Big Spring man facing multiple charges — including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon — is set to begin in 118th District Court Monday morning.
Brian Christopher Lewis, 27, currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center, was indicted Feb. 3 on charges of deadly conduct, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Students get ready for classes

Ready or not, here it comes.
With the start of the new school year less than two weeks away, Howard County school districts have announced times and dates for students to pick up schedules or meet their teachers.
Classes begin Aug. 27 at Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan.
Big Spring High School officials announced the following schedule pick-up times:
• Seniors — from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday.
• Juniors — from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.
• Sophomores — from 9 a.m. until noon Thursday.

Arson possible fire cause

August 18, 2012

Two abandoned structures, located about six miles north of Big Spring, burned Thursday night.
According to Howard County Volunteer Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan, a house fire call — on FM 669 — was received around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
“Upon arrival we found not one, but two structures were engulfed in flames,” Sullivan said.
Due to the location of the fires and in order to protect firefighters working the scene, Sullivan said crews allowed the fires to burn out.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• JOSHUA SEAN RESNICK, 30, of Humble, was arrested Friday on warrants for expired motor vehicle inspection certificate (two counts), driving while license invalid (two counts) and fail to appear (four counts).
• CARLOS MUNOZ, 25, of 809 Willia St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MICHAEL BARRETT ODONNELL, 58, of 2829 Hunters Glen, was arrested Friday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Edward Eugene Jones, 83, of Big Spring died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, in a local nursing home. Private family services will be held at the Texas Veterans Cemetery in Abilene.
He will lie in state at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home through Sunday, Aug. 19. 2012.
He was born Oct. 10, 1928, in Hermleigh, Texas, and married Dorothy Rae Derr on Dec. 27, 1974, in Houston.
