Howard County commissioners are set to hold a special meeting Monday morning to discuss â and possibly take action on â the proposed 2012-2013 tax rate, the foundation for the courtâs fiscal plan for the coming year.
According to County Auditor Jackie Olson, the effective tax rate â the rate which would bring in the same levy as last year â is 30.9221 cents per $100 valuation. The rollback rate, which is comprised of the effective rate plus an 8 percent increase in the levy, has been calculated at 33.1460 cents per $100 valuation.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
â˘ JOSE ANTONIO NIETO, 31, of 2403 S. Main St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
â˘ CODY DEAN JAMES, 23, of Lamesa, was arrested Friday on charges of public intoxication and urinating in a public place.
â˘ MARGIE GREEN, 29, of 711 S. Johnson St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
â˘ ISRAEL MIRAMONTES, 28, of 411 N. Scurry St., was arrested Saturday, on a charge of evading arrest/detention previously convicted SJF.
Otilia Alvarado, 84, of Big Spring, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at Baylor Medical Center of Grapevine. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Urena âJudyâ Loya, 80, of Big Spring died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
A prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
Urena was born June 6, 1932, in Sonora, Texas, and married Octavio A. Loya. He preceded her in death July 23, 2004.
Rylee Brooklynn Marie Brookins, daughter of Lauren Dorn of Snyder and Joseph Brookins of Mauston, Wisc., was born July 21, 2012, at 5:47 p.m.
She weighed 6 pounds 11 ounces and measured 19 Â˝ inches.
Maternal grandparents are Gina and Cody Wells of Big Spring and Christopher and Palma Dorn of Pampa.
Paternal grandparents are Kelly and Duane Brookins of Azle, Texas.
Hebrew Jones Jr. and Vivian (Bledsoe) Jones quietly observed their 45th wedding anniversary July 28, 2012, at Moss Creek Ranch.
The celebration was attended by all of Hebrew and Vivianâs children, grandchildren, as well as several other members of their families and friends.
Their grandsons are DaâMareon and Sareem; granddaughters are Megan Jones of Arlington, Brittany Thompson of Arlington, Lamesaha McDowell of Elizabeth Town, N.C. Justice and Jazmine Jones of Big Spring.
Ms. Larissa Gail Adkins and Mr. John Francis Fletcher were united in marriage June 22, 2012, at 5 p.m. in Wailea, Hawaii on the island of Maui. The ceremony was on a hill above the Pacific Ocean located outside of Gannonâs Restaurant. Leslie Adkins, brother of the bride, officiated at the ceremony. There were twenty-two guests in attendance and numerous close friends and family were able to watch the ceremony via the restaurantâs live feed through their web-camera.
The American Junior Rodeo Association has a new face, a local face, at least for awhile that is.
Anne-Marie Lugo, a 14-year-old Forsan High School student, was recently chosen to be featured on the AJRA 60th anniversary Dodge truck given away for the year. Though rodeo is a a big part of her life and her resume is full of accomplishments to prove it, her talents don't stop there.
âNot only has she been a winner at every stage at this point, but she has also been a fantastic example for her peers and regularly mentors younger girls,â Cindy Lugo, Anne-Marie's mother, said.
Many years of service were recognized as Lacy Edwards was honored as the Hangar 25 Air Museum July Veteran of the Month on Thursday morning.
Edwards, a Navy and Air Force veteran, received the honor at his home, because of medical reasons. The eventful, emotion-filled ceremony held meaning to all those attending.
âWe have been trying to honor him as veteran of the month for more than a year now,â Mike Tarpley, fellow veteran and member of the Veteran of the Month group, said. âOnce he finally agreed to be veteran of the month, cancer hit him.

â˘ JIMI LEE PAREDEZ, 25, of 105 W. Eighth St. Apt. C, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency and warrants for interfering with an emergency phone call and criminal trespass and a charge of disorderly conduct â language.
