Howard County Commissioners opted to table a proposed burn ban Monday morning following a weekend of intermittent rainfall throughout the Crossroads area, moisture local firefighting officials say should buy residents a few weeks of relative safety from wildfires.
Precinct 3 Commissioner Jimmie Long â€” serving in place of County Judge Mark Barr, who was unable to attend Monday's meeting â€” said the county had received a recommendation from Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tommy Sullivan to table the proposed county-wide ban for a minimum of two weeks.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
â€¢ BILLY WAYNE CHRISTIAN, 52, of 2808 Sherman Rd., was arrested Monday on warrants for no driver's license â€“ when unlicensed (two counts), expired registration (two counts), failure to maintain financial responsibility (two counts) and failure to appear (six counts).
â€¢ BILLY RAY HALL, 34, of Flat, Texas, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
â€¢ ROBERT RUBEN SANCHEZ, 48, of 1023 Stadium, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
Marta Ontiveros, 75, of Big Spring died Sunday, July 8, 2012, at her residence. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Msgr Bernard L. Gully officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
She was born Nov. 15, 1936, in Toyah, Texas, to Manuela and Carmen Rey. She married Jose Primitivo (Tivo) Ontiveros on Dec. 13, 1985, in Big Spring. She had been a resident of Big Spring since 1939.
Charles D. Lee, 72, of Midland died Monday, July 9, 2012, in a Midland hospital. His services are pending with Gilbreath Funeral Home of Stanton.
Two people remain hospitalized after a Big Spring man allegedly assaulted them with his motor vehicle early Sunday morning.
Edward Aguilar, 33, is in custody at Howard County Detention Center this morning after being arrested on multiple aggravated assault charges, according to information released by Big Spring Police Department Sgt. Tony Everett.
Everett said the alleged assault arose from a domestic disturbance in the 2600 block of Albrook.
The Big Spring City Council will meet Tuesday to handle a rather routine agenda, including final approval of an ordinance providing for the issuance of a specific use permit for construction and operation of a nursing home facility near the corner of Alamesa and Wasson.
The permit, which was applied for by M.U.G.S. Properties LLC for the 10-acre property, was first heard by the council during its June 26 meeting, which included a public hearing on the matter.

â€¢ JOSE MARCOS PESINA, 34, of Midland, Texas, was arrested Sunday on a charge of hindering officers discharging official duties.

The bride-elect is the daughter of John and Keyya Anderson of Gail. She is a 2006 graduate of Borden County ISD and a 2009 graduate of Texas A&M University. She is employed as an account executive for Integracare Hospice.
The prospective groom is the son of Leck and Lisa Fuston-Leck from Turkey, Texas, and Lisa Fuston from Creede, Colo.
He is a 2006 graduate of Valley High School and a 2008 graduate of Clarendon College. He is a camp manager at the Bell Ranch.
