SA’s Angel Tree numbers down, but only slightly

With the application process for the annual Angel Tree program completed, officials with the local Salvation Army say the number of children and seniors represented by this year's effort is slightly lower than expected.
Ada Lafler, Angel Tree coordinator for the local charity, said the application process went well, although it's still hard to get a solid count on how many area families have — and will — be approved.

Faye's Flowers turns 75

For 75 years, something beautiful has been going on at Faye's Flowers.

The long-time Big Spring business is celebrating its diamond anniversary this month, beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony today and continuing with a customer appreciation day Saturday which will feature drawings and a 20 percent off sale on the store's Christmas decorations.

The shop first opened its doors under the ownership of Faye Kuykendall in 1937 and has changed hands only three times since then.

Dennis Ausbie

Dennis Ausbie, 52, of Lubbock, formerly of Big Spring died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at his residence in Lubbock. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Mount Olive Memorial Park with the Rev. Holston Banks officiating.

He was born Sept. 4, 1960, in Big Spring, Texas, to Ruby Jewel (Scott) and James Edward Ausbie. He grew up in Big Spring and lived most of his life here. He relocated to Amarillo in 2006 and had most recently moved to Lubbock. He had worked for Price Construction and was a Baptist.

Bill Griffen, 73, of Big Spring died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

He was born Dec. 30, 1938, in Mechanicsville, N.Y., to Nettie (Poucher) and William Herbert Griffen. He married Darlene Brooks on June 29, 1968, in Old Lyme, Conn. The couple relocated to Big Spring in 1993 from Connecticut. He was a retired carpenter.

Arrest made in shooting death case

A local man wanted in connection with the Saturday shooting death of 33-year-old Luis Adolfo Pena has been arrested in San Angelo.

Chris Daniel Marquez, 19, of Big Spring was arrested at approximately 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of Sherwood Way in San Angelo, according to Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker.

“Marquez was arrested on the warrant for aggravated assault issued in the Saturday morning shooting in Howard County,” Parker said. “Marquez was arrested by the San Angelo Police Department with the assistance from the U.S. Marshals and Texas Rangers.”

Early voting ends Friday

Time is running out for area voters looking to cast their ballots early in Tuesday's election, as early voting will wrap up Friday.

At mid-week, approximately 4,239 ballots had been cast in the Crossroads area, accounting for more than one-quarter of the registered voters in the county, according to Howard County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• JAI ANTHONY KEYS, 43, of 1906 E. Highway 350, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• LUIS ALBERTO GARFIAS, 24, of 1300 Johnson, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for no driver's license – when unlicensed (two counts), failure to appear (two counts) and driving while license invalid.
• JAVIER DIAZ, 27, of Denver, Colo., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of no driver's license – when unlicensed.
