Barbara Laswell Gage, 84, of Big Spring died Friday, March 11, 2011, in a local nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Mark Lindsey officiating.
Illa Morgan, 94, of Big Spring died Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Memorial Park Peace Chapel with the Rev. Joey Bacon officiating.
Big Spring voters will get the chance to vote on term limits for elected city officials in the May municipal elections, as the city council is expected to certify the results of a recent petition to force the change to the city charter to the polls.
The Big Spring City Council will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. today to certify the results and call for the election, which will be held May 14.
A 9-year-old Big Spring girl was killed Sunday afternoon near Lake Texoma in Marshall County, Okla., after an all-terrain vehicle overturned and rolled over her, according to officials with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety.
Summer Rain Quillen was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property near Lake Texoma, approximately six miles south of Kingston, Okla.
It's all about education and communication.
The Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce is trying something a little different. This year, a state of the Community Series luncheon will take place in four parts, with the first part at noon, March 29 at the Dora Roberts Community Center. The entire series is aimed at educating local residents about the community, by hearing from the entities involved.
“There are so many entities that play a big part and we thought it was time to bring them to the forefront,” said Debbye ValVerde, Chamber executive director.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• MELISSA GAY YOUNG, 41, of 1700 W. Third St., was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• DOMINICK RENE CERVANTES, 17, of 1900 Winston, was arrested Saturday on a charge of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.
• MATTHEW LUIS ALMAZAN, 24, of 3607 Dixon, was arrested Saturday on a warrant for no driver's license – when unlicensed.

Following a meeting with officials from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, city and county representatives say the two local governments will be working together to keep the Big Spring State Park — which has been targeted for closure by the state — open and operating.
County Judge Mark Barr said Friday he feels like it's certainly a viable option for the city and county to work together to keep the facility, which has been a Big Spring landmark and tourist destination for many years, from falling prey to state budget cuts.
The agenda for Monday morning's meeting of the Howard County commissioners court includes a number of routine items, including discussion of county ordinances.
Precinct 2 County Commissioner Donnie Baker has asked that the discussion — centering around ordinances within the county — be placed on the agenda.
STANTON — A Martin County grand jury chose not to indict a Midland law enforcement officer involved in the January shooting death of a 54-year-old man following a standoff near Lenorah.
According to 118th District Attorney Hardy Wilkerson, the grand jury declined to indict the officer that shot and killed Lonny Martin following a brief chase on Highway 176 on Jan. 23.
