Aquatics center operating in the black, officials say

June 12, 2012

Any worries the Big Spring Aquatics Center would lose its allure to area water-seekers after its opening year can be safely placed to rest, as the facility continues to draw capacity-level crowds with the beginning of its second season.

The aquatic center — which opened last summer to fill the void left when the municipal swimming pool was shut down because it failed to meet state and federal regulations — has opened its 2012 season to much fanfare, according to Assistant City Manager Todd Darden.

Rains buy some time for CRMWD

June 11, 2012

Recent rainfall in and around the Crossroads area — along with increased water conservation efforts — has likely added another two to three months to the dangerously short lifespan of the local water district's lone surviving reservoir, according to officials.

According to John Grant, Colorado River Municipal Water District general manager, the recent rainfall has done little to improve low reservoir levels at Lake Thomas and Lake Spence, but Lake Ivie saw a considerable gain from Mother Nature's gift.

Runoff voting begins Monday

June 9, 2012

Early voting for the June 23 Big Spring Independent School District run-off election begins Monday, officials said.
BSISD District 2 incumbent Maria Padilla, seeking her fourth term on the school board, will face challenger Pat DeAnda in the run-off. In the May 12 municipal election, Padilla received slightly more than 39 percent of the vote total, compared to Deanda receiving 37 percent.
Because neither candidate claimed a majority, a run-off was ordered.
Only those voters residing in BSISD District 2 will be eligible to cast ballots.
