Some Howard College choir members will get the chance to sing on a much bigger stage.
Five Howard College choral students have won all-state recognition and one has gained national honors.
Kevin Porras, Damian Perez, Nadia Garcia and Amber Bernal of Big Spring and Brantley Cahoon of Forsan were recently named to the Texas Two-Year College Choral Directors' All-State Honor Choir, HC Music Director Eddie Vandewalker announced.
Final reading of a measure that could help the municipality save between $5,000 and $25,000 a year tops the agenda for Monday night's meeting of the Big Spring City Council.
The meeting — which was rescheduled for Monday to avoid conflicts with Howard County Day in Austin — is set to get under way at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, located at 307 E. Fourth St.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity Friday and early Saturday:
• MANUEL DEJESUS LOPEZ-LUNA, 71, 408 S. Lancaster, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.
• CHIRSTOPHER JOHN GARCIA, 28, San Angel,o, was arrested on a charge of speeding.
• JUNIOR JONES, 24, 1015 E. 20th, was arrested on a warrant charging two counts of indecency with a child.
• CREIG WARNER HOLLANBD, 52, Amarillo, was arrested on a warrant from another agencfy.
FORT WORTH — John Lewis Stripling, 94, was called by the Lord in the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011. Funeral: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at Ridglea United Methodist Church, 6036 Locke Ave. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park.
Lillian Hildebrand, 87, of Big Spring died Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, in Lamesa. Services are pending at this time.
Patti Robertson, 57, of Big Spring, died on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, in a local hospital. Memorial services will be held at a later time.
February 4th
Big Spring’s Tanner Henry signs on to play football with Cisco College Friday morning at the Athletic Training Center. Henry was accompanied by friends, coaches, teammates and family members. Before he signed, head coach Phillip Ritchey gave a speech. Also known as a force on defense with the Steers, Henry signed on to play offensive tackle for the Wranglers. Henry said he is excited to continued playing football at the next level.
Former Big Spring mayor Russ McEwen and longtime Big Spring Refinery administrator Verna Davis were named the 2010 Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce Man and Woman of the Year Thursday night, as the organization celebrated another year of promoting Crossroads businesses.
Jeanie Knocke, the 2009 Chamber Woman of the Year, presented the award to Davis, lauding the Big Spring woman for her hard work and determination to make the Crossroads area a better place to live.
The Big Spring High School swim team looks to take the next step after a successful showing at the District 4-4A meet Jan. 21 and 22.
The regional meet begins today and ends Saturday at the Andrews High School Natotorium in Andrews and the young Steers are well-represented.
Caleb McMahon, Andrew Johnson, Eli Castillo and Seth Pearson represent the boys today in individual events. Megan Larson will be the lone girl representing Big Spring.
Service and sacrifice were honored during the Four Chaplains Memorial Service Thursday at First Baptist Church.
The service, hosted by the VA Medical Center, honored all area veterans who had died in the preceding 12 months.
The Four Chaplains Memorial is named after four U.S. Army chaplains who sacrificed their lives to save others when the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, which was carrying more than 900 U.S. troops, was attacked and sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of Greenland in 1943.
