Retired teacher Pat DeAnda bested incumbent Maria Padilla to win the Big Spring Independent School District District 2 seat in Saturday's runoff election.
In extremely light voting, DeAnda edged Padilla by a 13-10 margin. Padilla had finished slightly ahead of DeAnda during the municipal election in May. However, since neither woman gained a majority of the vote total, a runoff election was ordered.
Padilla, first elected to the BSISD board in 2003, was seeking her fourth term as a trustee.

Imagine your boss coming up to you and saying he was cutting your salary, only he wouldn’t say how much your salary was getting cut or even when the cuts would take effect.
Now, try figuring out your household budget.
That’s kind of the situation facing Howard College administrators as they start preparing their budget for the next fiscal year — they know they’re going to lose state appropriation money, but not how much or exactly when a final decision on those cuts will be handed down by state officials.

A retirement party was held for Watts earlier this week, though the announcement of his retiring had been known for some time.
Howard County commissioners will have a number of issues to consider when they meet Monday morning, including moving a communications tower and addressing staffing issues at the local Department of Public Safety office.
According to County Judge Mark Barr, the court is expected to consider selecting another location for one of the county’s communication towers.
“The tower is currently located on another tower, I believe on South Mountain,” Barr said. “My understanding is that tower has been condemned, so we’ve been looking at other locations for it.”
