Alon USA showed what it can do by presenting a $200,000 check during Thursday's dedication ceremony for the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.
â€śWhen there is a need in this community, the Big Spring Refinery is going to step up and do what we can to meet it,â€ť said Jimmy Crosby, vice president of refining. â€śThatâ€™s what weâ€™re doing with the Boys and Girls Club and the Salvation Army with our pledge of $200,000 to support the new facility and its programs for years to come.â€ť
Cases of West Nile virus continue to be discovered across Texas, including the Permian Basin.
Recently, four cases were reported in Andrews and four in Midland/Ector County, with numbers continuing to change daily. However, those numbers are small in comparison to the number of cases being seen throughout the state.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, there have been 586 cases reported in Texas this year. Out of those cases, there have been 21 fatalities. No cases have been reported in Howard County.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
â€˘ KYLER RAY CANNADY, 22, of Lubbock, Texas, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for theft.
â€˘ TIFFANY ANN ELDER, 30, of 2600 Langley, was arrested Thursday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana â€“ two ounces or less.
â€˘ DARRIN JAY CROOKS, 53, of 4200 Bilger, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency and charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana â€“ two ounces or less.
Randell Eston Hollis, 41, of Big Spring died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Pat Ray, pastor of Prairie View Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
He was born Oct. 21, 1970, in Big Spring, Texas.
Jonnie Spruill, 87, of Big Spring died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Kristi Lee Manor Nursing Home in Colorado City. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, in the Chapel at Mount Olive Memorial Park with Chaplain Walter McCall of Compass Hospice officiating.
She was born Dec. 18, 1924, in Big Spring, Texas, to Bernice and John Digby. She was a lifetime resident of Howard County.
The trial of a 27-year-old Big Spring man charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon ended Wednesday in a mistrial, as the jury announced it was hopelessly deadlocked.
According to officials with the 118th District Court, the jury â€” which was seated Monday and heard testimony Tuesday and Wednesday â€” announced it was hung late Wednesday afternoon with 10 jurors voting guilty and two voting not guilty.
Brian Christopher Lewis, 27, currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center, was being tried on a single charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Manuel De Los Rios, 79, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at Hospice of Midland Inpatient Unit. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Elder Eliseo Gamboa officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Lamesa Cemetery in Lamesa, Texas, with Trinidad Sanchez officiating.
COAHOMA â€” Some Coahoma Independent School District residents will see an increase in their tax bill this coming fiscal year.
During their Tuesday night meeting, CISD trustees approved a budget and tax rate for the 2012-2013 fiscal year that will result in an increase in local revenue for the school district.
The tax rate will remain the same at $1.27 per $100 property valuation. Of that figure, $1.04 will be devoted to maintenance and operating costs, while the remainder is targeted for debt service.
