Big Spring guards Valerie Ross and Mackenzie Stone live behind the 3-point line.
The two await the moment defenses present an opportunity and leave one of them open, and once Ross and Stone get started, it’s hard to stop them.
“When me and Mackenzie are in, we just click,” Ross said. “It’s not competition, but when she makes one, I want to make one. It just helps us out.”
HOBBS, N.M. — The Howard College women’s basketball team scratched and clawed its way back into a tough game against New Mexico Junior College Thursday night, but ultimately, a few key turnovers doomed the Hawks in a 76-70 loss in overtime.
The Hawks (15-4, 1-1 in WJCAC play) were down by 10 deep into the second half, but made a push to tie the game at the end of regulation. The Lady T-Birds (15-3, 1-0) had a chance to steal the win with the last shot of the second half, but as soon as that was off the mark, Howard had a chance.
Coahoma
While the Coahoma boys are coming off their first win in District 3-2A play, the girls are hoping to get the bad taste out of their mouths from Tuesday’s loss to Lubbock Roosevelt. Both teams are on the road against Colorado City today. The girls play at 6 p.m. And the boys at 7:30 p.m.
Forsan
Both Forsan teams couldn’t get wins over Stanton at home, but they’ll have a chance for redemption at Slaton today. The girls play at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.
Stanton
After practice Thursday, Big Spring guard Luke Adams and boys’ basketball coach Cliff Thompson caught themselves in a conversation, mapping out different scenarios of how the Steers can clinch a playoff berth or, even better, win District 5-3A.
Actually, it’s been a recurring topic among the Steers this week.

Howard women
Howard College women’s basketball head coach Earl Diddle believes New Mexico Junior College is the team to beat in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.
There’s reason to believe him, too, the way he describes the Lady Thunderbirds.
“I really feel that they’re one of the top teams in the league,” Diddle said. “They beat South Plains by 20 in the (WJCAC Pre-Conference Tournament). They pose a lot of problems for us. They shoot the 3 well and they have very, very good inside play. So they pose a lot of problems for everyone in the league.”
According to Colorado City officials, Shawn Adkins has been named a “person of interest” by investigators in the recent disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Darlene Dunn, but no arrests have been made at this time.
Dunn was last seen walking from her home in northern Colorado City to a friend's house about 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, according to initial police reports.
The trial date for a Big Spring man accused of possessing a “rape kit” with intent to commit aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault has been pushed back until March, according to officials with the 385th District Court in Midland.
Juan Jose Guerra, 49, of 1 Courtney Place, was arrested April 28 in Midland after law enforcement officials were notified the suspect was acting suspicious.
A little cold weather wasn't about to stop this hardy group of future farmers.
Despite frigid temperatures, the annual Howard County Junior Livestock Show began its annual run Wednesday at the county fair barns.
The show, which runs through Saturday, features 122 exhibitors showing 311 entries, a decrease of 84 animals from last year's show, officials said.
The most probable cause for the decrease, they said, was the economy. It costs several hundred dollars to care for and prepare an animal for livestock show presentation.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• KRISTIN SH'NEA MARMOLEJO, 18, of 1804 S. Owens, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of theft – shoplifting.
• STEPHANIE SARALYNN JUAREZ, 17, of 508 E. 18th St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of theft – shoplifting.
• DERRICK JONATHAN COLEGROVE, 21, of 3209 Oasis Rd., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JUSTIN HENRY FRANCO, 21, of 105 N.E. 10th St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of possession of marijuana in a drug free zone – two ounces or less.
