LD (Sonny) Jackson, 70, of Hillsboro died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at his residence. Masonic graveside services will be held at noon Friday, May 11, 2012, at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro with John Milburn officiating. Visitation was from 9-11 a.m. Friday at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.

Man arrested for trying to steal cash register

A Big Spring man was arrested early this morning on a charge of robbery after investigators say he tried to steal a cash register from a convenience store on the city's north side.

Randy Joe Hurrington, 51, was booked into the county detention center by the Big Spring Police Department on a charge of robbery, according to law enforcement officials.

Boys & Girls Club offers summer child care

As area students hungrily await the end of the school year, many parents are faced with a child care dilemma during the summer months.

However, the Salvation Army's Boys and Girls Club may have the answer for many families. The local charity is preparing to kick off its annual summer program June 4.

Boys and Girls Club program director Sonnet Hildebrand said the program is expected to serve approximately 150 area children between the ages of 6 and 18 years, and with a new facility ready to go, the program will have even more to offer this year.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• DAVONTE DASHUN ANDERSON, 19, of 1020 Ridgeroad, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for failure to maintain financial responsibility, no driver's license – when unlicensed and failure to appear (two counts).
• KEVIN LAMONT WILLIAMS, 39, of Temple, Texas, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for possession of marijuana in a drug free zone – two ounces or less and a warrant from another agency.

Harold Glenn Henley

Harold Glenn Henley passed away May 9, 2012, after a lengthy illness. He was born Oct. 9, 1926, in Scurry County, Texas, to Thomas and Mamie Henley. He graduated from Ira High School in 1944 and served in the Army during World War II.

He met and married Joan Saunders in January of 1948 and they spent the next 18 months living on the river as river riders at Black Gap in Big Bend Park. After farming in Scurry County and two years in Garden City, he and Joan moved to Stanton in 1961 and remained there for 39 years.

Mayes signs with Oklahoma Wesleyan University

When introducing Diamond Mayes to the crowd who gathered to watch her sign a letter of intent to play basketball at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Big Spring High School Athletic Director Phillip Ritchey said “Diamond (Mayes) is what all Big Spring Steers — Lady Steers should be like.”

Mayes, who has played on the varsity basketball team for four years, as well as other sports, received a full scholarship to OWU.

What drew Mayes to the school was the similarities between there and Big Spring.

Council denies Atmos rate hike request

Big Spring City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to deny a rate increase requested by Atmos Energy's West Texas Division estimated at $11.6 million, a move that will likely force the issue before the Texas Railroad Commission.

According to City Finance Director Peggy Walker, consultants brought in by a steering committee of cities effected by the proposed rate increase found the hike uncalled for, saying the energy giant could actually afford to lower rates.

Old schools come down as new campuses going up

One of the surest signs construction of new school buildings in Big Spring is nearing completion is the campuses they are replacing are about to be demolished.

Big Spring Independent School District trustees are expected to approve bids for the demolition of Washington and Marcy elementaries when they hold their monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

• JOHN MARTINEZ RAMIREZ JR., 45, of 1516 Sycamore St. A, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from other agency.
• CHRISTOPHER OBELL VANOVER, 34, of 1806 Winston, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of assault/aggravated with deadly weapon.
• JOHN ANTHONY MIER, 23, of 800 W. Marcy Drive 1, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of manufacture/deliver controlled substance more than four grams and less than 200 grams.
